By the time we reach adulthood, most of us can show off a scar of some kind, either on the face or on the body. Whether from a childhood accident, the remains of a skin condition such as acne or from a deeper wound such as a surgical incision or trauma. Many scars can fade over time and some we can live with. However, some scars can cause embarrassment or emotional upset.
There are many different types of scars, here are a few examples:
- pigmented scars which appear either pink or white on the skin following a cut.
- fine line scars which appear after a wound or surgery.
- hypotrophic or keloid scars which are the result of a skin trauma and where too much collagen collects in the wound area, causing a raised and bumpy appearance and can be itchy or painful.
- Pitted or sunken scars which appear because of a skin condition such as acne or chicken pox.
- Scar contractures – usually following a burn, where the skin tightens and becomes restricted in movement.
For those of us who would like to reduce or even remove a scar, there are many non-surgical options to choose from. At Skin Perfection in the heart of London, we offer a range of treatments to treat, fade and remove a variety of scars, to restore your confidence and improve the appearance of your skin.
Laser resurfacing – we offer the latest in non-ablative laser resurfacing treatment with our state of the art, FDA-approved, Palomar Starlux 1540 fractional laser system. This doesn’t forcefully remove skin, unlike CO2 lasers, and instead emits heat to stimulate the production of elastin and collagen. The treatment is especially effective in reducing the appearance of scars and stretch marks, and improves skin appearance and tone too. Anaesthetic isn’t required for laser resurfacing, and treatments can be completed in as little as 15 minutes.
Skin peels – these are specially formulated acids which are applied to the skin in various strengths to resurface the skin. Pigmented scars are especially responsive to dermal peels as the upper layers of the skin are resurfaced. Dead skin cells and other debris are sloughed away and new cell renewal is encouraged. Over a course of treatment, the skin’s surface can be smoothed and a more even tone can be seen.
DermaFrac™ – this device-led treatment offers the delivery of infused ingredients in to the skin with no pain and no downtime. It combines microdermabrasion with Microneedling using high-grade specialist serums and LED therapy. A precision controlled hand piece containing a microneedle roller tip cap and the serum of choice is moved over the skin, increasing collagen and fibroblast activity. The microneedles penetrate painlessly through the epidermis and to encourage collagen production and cell renewal. The result is smoother skin with a more even tone and texture.
Dermaroller – Using a hand-held device, Dermaroller makes tiny pin pricks in to the skin, creating a wound-healing response to resurface the skin, encourage collagen and elastin production and reduce scars. After a course of treatment, you’ll notice the scar tissue begin to contract and pigmentation fades. Dermaroller thickens the skin, which in-turn makes the appearance of the scars less visible. Dermaroller is particularly effective when treating acne scars or ‘pitting’ as it helps to fade the marks left behind by this condition.
