Acne is a mild to chronic skin condition that can affect both men and women in their teens and even in to adulthood. There are lots of myths surrounding the preventing acne, treating acne and acne scarring and here at Skin Perfection, London, we want to give our patients as much knowledge as possible on this condition and how to combat it.
Although acne is not a curable condition, in many cases, there are things we can do to prevent acne breakouts and to combat the symptoms, on a daily basis.
Keep your face clean
Wash your face twice daily to remove impurities, dead skin cells, and excess sebum (oil) from the skin’s surface. Washing more often than this is not always better for acne prone skin as it may do more harm than good.
Use tepid water and a mild facial cleanser. Using a harsh soap or scrubbing the skin excessively can irritate the already inflamed skin, so it’s important to not scrub too harshly with a scrub or an exfoliating glove.
Use a clean towel to dry your face and if you use a washcloth, only use it once before washing it.
Moisturize your skin
It’s a myth that skin with acne needs to be ‘dried out’ to stop breakouts. Acne products contain ingredients that dry the skin, so it’s important to always use a moisturizer that minimizes dryness and skin peeling.
Look for ‘non-comedogenic’ products as these will not block pores and cause blackheads or pimples. Products that are suitable for combination skin are also a good choice for acne prone skins.
Use a specialist acne product
Many in-clinic acne products don’t need a prescription but are developed especially for the condition. Many of these products contain ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide, along with various acids such as lactic acid or salicylic acid. These ingredients curb the spread of bacteria and dry excess oils. These products may cause drying or peeling when you first start using them, but you can adjust how much you use and how often.
Another option is a new OTC topical retinoid gel (Differin 0.1% gel). It works to keep the acne from forming. Use these products with caution if you have very sensitive skin.
We can advise you of the best products to use for your individual concerns.
Use specialist makeup
If you wear makeup, where possible, choose oil-free products, without added dyes or chemicals. Choose makeup that is non-comedogenic, meaning that it will not block your pores and create more breakouts.
Again, we can advise you on the best makeup to choose for acne prone, oily or congested skin.
Drink water and eat a good diet
Drinking plenty of water and eating a healthy diet will help to prevent further acne breakouts and will give your skin the nourishment and hydration it needs to heal and regenerate. Avoiding sugary foods such as chocolate has been proven to assist with the prevention of acne.
Ensuring you have a healthy diet will give your skin more resilience and a better tone and texture.
