What can you do if your acne is getting worse?

What can you do if your acne is getting worse? Most often, acne will go away on its own at the end of puberty. But some people still struggle with acne in their adult life. Acne can be an incredibly complex condition. But the good news is that almost all acne can be treated.  As long as you understand what triggers it. From our patient’s journey at Skin Perfection London, we know how frustrating it can be while waiting for your skin to improve. And in some cases it may get worse before it gets better.

What is acne?

Acne’s caused by the production of excess sebum. Which is an oil that stops the skin from drying out. This oil clumps together with dead skin cells within your pores, causing an acne lesion or spot.

These lesions vary in size and severity. And form when bacteria enters the pores, causing an inflammatory response from the immune system.

Acne can cause emotional upset, embarrassment and feelings of self-consciousness.  And even if the condition subsides, it can leave behind pitted or raised acne scars, a physical reminder of the condition. These scars can be permanent if not treated by an aesthetic or clinical professional.

So what can you do if your acne is getting worse?

Review your diet. Your must observe what flares up your acne. And what makes it worse.  Certain foods can aggravate acne. If you’re currently following a strict skincare routine, but your skin isn’t improving, you should evaluate your diet as the next step. Dairy and greasy foods, in particular, are known to cause problems with acne sufferers. You may also be lacking nutrients and essential vitamins, therefore a nutritious balanced diet is always recommended.

Review your current skin care plan. Recently there’s been a lot of articles about social media that promotes short video clips of miracle acne cures. You must remember what works for some, may not be suitable for you. And before using any products you purchased online, you should always speak to your skin practitioner. Each treatment plan should be unique considering your skin, sensitivity and medical background.

Are you using your skincare properly? Understanding your products is absolutely crucial when it comes to treating your acne at home. Many patients tend to overuse products or mix the wrong skincare.  Resulting in more harm than relief to the skin. You should always consult a trained professional about the right skincare regime. Also the person who recommends you these products should be re-assessing your skin’s response to them regularly.

You may need prescription strength topical treatment from a Dermatologist.  In some extreme cases, patients who suffer from severe acne may need antibiotics in combination with their skincare plan.  But this must be strictly supervised by the Doctor prescribing.
