7 laser hair removal myths busted? When it comes to laser hair removal I found that there are many misconceptions and beliefs that are wrong. And may even put patients off treatment. Over the past 20 years we’ve heard so many beliefs regarding laser hair removal that I’ve decided it’s time to bust those laser hair removal myths. And I have at least 7 of them.
7 laser hair removal myths busted
Myth 1 – It takes a long time
Although laser hair removal requires commitment, it’s nowhere near the time you spend shaving in your entire life time. In general it takes between 8-10 treatments to get hair free ( although this may be different for each individual) and then you don’t have to worry about hairy legs again. Other hair removal methods will require a life time of commitment and time sacrifice.
Myth 2 – It’s painful
The laser sensation is described as being a little pinprick feeling with a heat sensation which stops straight after the laser’s been fired. At Skin Perfection we’ve invested in Cynosures Cyro Cool Glides which the practitioners connect to the laser hand piece. Whilst your laser treatment is carried out, a comfortable cool air will blow at the skin and making the treatment more pleasant for you.
Myth 3 – Laser hair removal is only for women
NOT TRUE! Male patients seek laser hair removal as well as female patients. Laser will eradicate thick, course hair and saves you from shaving rashes, irritation and ingrowing hair. We are treating a number athletes who also develop ingrowing hair as a result of fraction and sweating. In conclusion laser hair removal is life changing for male patients as well.
Myth 4 – Laser hair removal isn’t suitable for dark skin
WRONG! While everyone is suitable for laser hair removal, not every laser is safe for all skin types. For example, patients with darker skin tones have a higher risk of developing skin burns if not treated with the right laser. This is due to the increased amount of pigment in their skin that may be targeted instead of the hair. Laser hair removal with a Cynosure device targets the melanin (pigment) in the hair. Consequently it destroys the hair cells that are responsible for hair growth without damaging or heating the surrounding skin.
Myth 5 – No shaving is needed before laser treatment
For the laser treatment to be effective, the hair has to attract the light energy and transport it to the hair follicle. However if there’s hair left on the surface, this energy will evaporate on the surface of the skin without reaching the root. Which means the treatment won’t be effective. For this reason all patients are asked to shave their hair before treatment.
Myth 6 – The hair will be gone straight after a single treatment
Laser works by destroying the hair follicle, instead of ripping out the hair instantly. Many patients wonder the day after their treatment why they’re seeing hair growth. The measure of a successful laser treatment isn’t the hair that’s coming out after your session. But the reducing hair growth that you’ll experience after each cycle.
Myth 7 – It’s expensive
Although at first it may seem like it’s expensive. However when you work out the number of treatments that you’re having you’ll be surprised to learn it actually works out cheaper than waxing! Where as waxing have to be repeated at every 3 weeks for most part of your adult life, laser hair removal will get rid of your unwanted hair in 8-10 session ( this may vary for individuals where some need less treatment and some may require maintenance). In conclusion your overall costs for laser hair removal will be cheaper than a lifetime of shaving or waxing.
