Should you exfoliate acne? | Skin Perfection

Should you exfoliate acne?

Should you exfoliate acne prone skin? Are there any substitutes for patients with acne? And will it make your skin better or worse? These are questions most of my patients ask me during their skin assessment. When it comes to treating patients with acne, the whole skin care game changes. And you must know the best option for your skin.

Should you exfoliate acne?

Regardless if you have mild or severe acne, regular exfoliation will smooth and soften your skin. In addition it’ll brighten your complexion. Exfoliation will also help your pores from becoming clogged with dead skin cells and excess oils. Which means it’ll also help to reduce breakouts.

Although exfoliation is super important to keep your skin clear of acne, if you suffer from breakouts and sensitive skin, you must avoid harsh scrubs, sponges and cloths that could irritate your skin. Instead of physical you should opt for chemical exfoliants.  Chemical exfoliants use acids ( glycolic, lactic, salicylic acids) or enzymes to dissolve the glue that holds dead skin cells together without any irritating scrubbing action.

What are the best chemical exfoliants for acne prone skin

As Dr Mervyn Patterson says – Avoid exfoliating scrubs that remove healthy skin cells and lipids, as this exposes the deeper layers to environmental damage and water loss.  You’re best to use a ‘liquid’ exfoliator instead – products like Epionce Lytic Tx, a selective chemical exfoliator. These feature natural ingredients containing salicylic and azelaic acids which gently remove dead skin cells without harming the skin barrier.

When it comes to exfoliating acne prone skin, you want to use ingredients that can penetrate deeply into the skin. Where it’ll collect all the acne causing dead skin cells. While all chemical exfoliants can reach the deeper layers of the skin, one ingredient in particular perfectly formulated for this is salicylic acid.

Salicylic acid is an oil soluble exfoliant that goes deep into your pores to clear acne and blackheads. As it’s anti- inflammatory it will also help to calm your skin and minimise redness.
