If you are new to aesthetic treatments, first you may feel overwhelmed by the different terminologies and options. One that my patients often enquire about is – are microneedling and microdermabrasion the same? What makes them different? Is one better than the other?
Are microneedling and microdermabrasion the same?
The short answer is no, they aren’t the same. They’re simply two different approaches to different grades of skin conditions. Let’s see the main purpose of both.
Microneedling
Microneedling is a rollering procedure that causes small needles to prick the skin. This punctures the skin and causes physical trauma. By causing trauma microneedling prompts the deeper layers of your skin to heal and rebuild. And also increases collagen production.
Collagen is a very important protein that will maintain your skin’s firmness, youthfulness and smooth texture. As you age the amount of collagen in your skin reduces. And there are other factors that will also result in loss of collagen such as acne, scarring and stretch marks. So its clear after a certain age and after certain skin conditions your skin may a little help stimulating the production of new collagen. This is where microneedling comes in to play.
Microdermabrasion
Where as microdermabrasion uses vacuum and crystal technology to deeply exfoliate and unclog the skin. It’s great to rejuvenate your skin and remove the dead skin cells, but hasn’t got the strength to stimulate collagen production like micro needling does. And it’s not able to reach under the skin’s surface unlike rollering.
To summarise
Microneedling gives a deeper rejuvenation while stimulating collagen production and reducing the appearance of scars. While microdermabrasion is a less superficial resurfacing procedure that removes the dead skin cells from your skin, unclog blocked pores and removes black heads while giving you a healthy, glowing complexion.
