During laser hair removal consultation one of the first questions patients are eager to find out is the sun exposure during laser hair removal? Can you go in the sun before and after laser hair removal? How long do you have to wait? And why it’s important to keep the area you laser out of the sun? What can happen to your skin and will it compromise your results?
How laser hair removal works?
Laser works by emitting heat, that is picked up by the pigment in your hair and transported to its root. Which is what the heat targets and destroys preventing future hair growth. For the treatment to be effective your hair has to be at a specific stage of its growth. However as not all your hair is growing at the same speed, the treatment has to be repeated in every 4-6 weeks to be able to capture all the different hair cycles.
Can you go in the sun before and after laser hair removal?
The short and easy answer is NO. Not at least for 2 weeks post treatment. And why? Well here is the reason. For the laser to be effective the pigment in your hair has to absorb the laser’s heat. As a result of sun exposure your pigment level increases.
Because everyone’s different, therefore every skin will react differently. During the laser treatment this increased amount of melanin will absorb the laser. But may leak to the surface of the skin leaving you with burns. For this reason you must report both past and planned sun exposure ( including sun beds) to your practitioner before your treatment. This will allow your practitioner to assess your skin to determine if you need a new skin test. Or based on your upcoming sun exposure are you still able to have your treatment. To keep your skin safe and to get the best result out of your treatment you’ll be encouraged to stay out of the sun for the duration of your treatment course.
