Did you know that you can suffer sun damage from driving? That’s right! The sun’s damaging rays can still pass through the window putting you at risk of sunburn or other skin conditions, especially on the right side of your body. Because your right side is more exposed it can receive as much as 6 times more UV radiation as the left side of body.
This can increase the risk of you developing wrinkles, ageing skin, discolouration and even skin cancer.
How to reduce the risk of sun damage from driving?
To limit the UV exposure and the risk of skin damage ( or skin cancer) you should take preventative steps which should include the following:
- Apply a sunscreen before you get in the car. Choose a water-resistant sunscreen that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or above. Preferably with a broad spectrum of protection against both UV-A and UV-B rays. They protect your skin by creating a shield that forces the UV rays of the sun to bounce back off the skin completely. Sun protection is without a doubt the most important step for long term cancer and wrinkle protection. For easy access, keep extra sunscreen in your car, this way you can reapply every 3-4 hours.
- Protective clothing. To protect your skin you should try and wear long clothing, UV blocking sun glasses and a hat with a wide brim. Especially if you’re driving a convertible you should take extra precautions to protect your skin.
- Invest in UV protection film. To keep yourself safe, consider purchasing a clear or tinted UV-protection film for your car windows. Some films block up to 99% of UV rays, and research shows that a UV-protection film can reduce sun damage by 93%.
