Why does keratosis pilaris happen?

Why does Keratosis Pilaris happen? And why it happens to you? The condition can be super annoying especially when you never had to deal with skin conditions before. Keratosis Pilaris is a condition that doesn’t discriminate. Although very annoying and has a direct affect on your confidence it is thankfully harmless. But let’s see why it happens and what can you do to prevent it?

Why does keratosis pilaris happen?

Keratosis Pilaris happens when a natural protein called Keratin builds up under your skin. This, excess Keratin blocks the openings of your hair follicles, which can cause the small red or white bumps to appear. Keratosis Pilaris also takes the name of “chicken skin” as your skin takes on this appearance. So, no wonder if you experience this stubborn condition you would like to reduce or even, eradicate the symptoms.

How to prevent Keratosis Pilaris?

Although there is no specific cure for KP, with a choice of non-surgical procedures and consistent skincare you can manage your condition. And also reduce the appearance significantly.

MoisturiseAfter every shower or bath soothe your skin with moisturising lotion. Also make sure you apply to the skin while it’s still dump.

Exfoliate – Gently exfoliate and gently wash your skin to remove dead skin cells morning and night.

Medical grade skincare – Use skincare that contain ingredients which will soothe your skin, make it softer and loosen the dead skin cells. These could be glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid or tretinoins.

No more rubbing/friction – Never rub your skin, but pat dry after shower or batch.

Presription steroid creams – If you suffer from a severe case of KP that causes you a lot of redness and itching you may be prescribed steroid creams by your GP. Although only resort to this as the last option. As steroids can make your skin thin and sensitive.
