The answer is definitely a yes. Sun damage can cause itchy skin. When you think of the good, old, sunny holidays how many times have your skin burned to the point which left you uncomfortable, in pain and red like a lobster? Not to mention the itch that accompanied these unpleasant side effects.
Can sun damage cause itchy skin?
Sun damage can result in mild to severe sun allergies, which manifest as small, red, painful and itchy bumps/ rashes, in some cases hives on the skin. This irritation can be so severe you may seek medical attention and could result in prescription of antibiotics. So just like any other allergies you should take sun damage seriously. And avoid spending time in the sun with skin that has been compromised to protect from further reaction.
Remember prevention is always the best protection. Especially if you know that you’re prone to sun allergies, you should take extra care to prevent even the slightest reaction to occur. Here are a few steps you could implement to avoid sun allergy;
- Apply a sunscreen before you go outside. Choose a water-resistant sunscreen that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or above, with a broad spectrum of protection against both UV-A and UV-B rays. They protect your skin by creating a shield that forces the UV rays of the sun to bounce back off the skin completely. Sun protection is without a doubt the most important step for long term cancer and wrinkle protection.
- Limit the time you spend outside, especially during the peak hours. If unavoidable try and wear long clothing and a hat with a wide brim
- Wear sunglasses with UV light protection.
- Be aware that some medicines and skin care products can increase your skin’s risk of UV damage. These include certain antibiotics, prescription medicines. And also certain nonprescription skin care products containing alpha-hydroxy acids that can make your skin more vulnerable to damage from sunlight.
