Wearing a mask daily can be hard on your skin. And although the restrictions have eased, some professions still require you to wear masks daily. So your skincare when wearing a mask is even more crucial. And there are steps you can implement today that will keep your skin health and balanced even when wearing the mask.
A new wave of skin conditions
You may have experienced a new wave of skin problems that you never had to deal with before. Or noticed that existing skin conditions may have emphasised. If you have sensitive and oily skin you may have been noticing more acne breakouts aka maskne, but itchiness and irritation are also common symptoms after wearing face masks for long hours.
Maskne is a real thing!
Maskne appears after bacteria, sweat and oil becomes trapped on your skin while covering with a face mask that causes friction and rubbing, leading to breakouts on this specific area. During the pandemic the daily use of masks have increased. Naturally this has led to more breakouts which are not only visible but can be painful and uncomfortable. This is specially bad news for acne sufferers and patients with sensitive skin but also affects patients who have never had to deal with skin issues before.
Implement these easy steps to your skincare when wearing a face mask
Tip 1 – Change your face mask at least twice a day. This will reduce the amount of oil that rubs over your skin. And gives you an opportunity to clean the face between masks. And lets your skin breath for a moment. If you use cloth masks, ensure you wash and change these daily.
Tip 2 – Ensure you keep up with your daily skincare routine even more consistent than ever before. And avoid any products that can irritate your skin.
Tip 3 – Wash your face with gentle cleanser that is mild and fragrant free (morning and night).
Tip 4 – Moisturize your skin before and after wearing a mask. Adding moisturiser can create a protective layer especially if you have dry and sensitive skin.
Tip 5 – Minimise your daily use of make up. If you can’t avoid wearing it, opt for mineral make up, that is breathable and doesn’t clog your pores.
