No laser hair removal without shaving?

No laser hair removal without shaving? That’s right. When you hear laser hair removal and shaving in the same sentence you may be wondering what’s the point to the laser treatment if you still need to shave your hair. Well, first you need to understand how laser hair removal works. Laser is different to any hair removal methods you may have tried in the past. And for that your results will also be incomparable to other hair removal treatments. Instead of ripping out your hair, the laser aims at the root which is its main target. But let’s dive into it properly and I will explain why you should never do laser hair removal without shaving.

Laser hair removal basics

Laser hair removal works by emitting a light. This light is picked up by the pigment in your hair and travel straight to its root. Which is what the main targets is. Once there, the heat destroys your follicles preventing future hair growth. In order for your treatment to work, we need your follicles in tact and  under the surface of the skin.

In preparation for your treatments you’ll be asked to shave the hair from the area of treatment. Ideally the day before. This way you can avoid any shaving irritation, cuts or bleeding that could interrupt your treatment on the day.

Waxing, epilating and shaving creams aren’t recommended as these can rip out the root. Which is exactly what the laser would have to target. As a result if there is no hair in the follicle the laser energy would waste away on the surface of your skin.

So now you understand how to prepare for your treatment and why you can only shave. But also let’s talk about what would happen if you left the hair unshaven.

If there is hair left on the surface, the laser light will waste away on the surface rather than going straight the follicles. Not to mention this can leave you with cat scratch marks and could even result in burning your skin.

When it comes to the concept of shaving facial areas you may not want to hear the word shaving or razors. Which is totally understandable and the good news is that there is an alternative solution for you. On smaller areas of the face that you don’t feel comfortable shaving, you can also trim or cut the hair as close to the surface as possible. Remember no hair should be left above skin’s surface but it must be attached to the follicles. This will ensure your treatment will be as effective as possible
