Why didn’t laser hair removal work?

When you’ve invested your time and hard earned cash into laser hair removal treatments, the last thing you want to hear and feel that it didn’t work for you after all. Frustrated and annoyed by this point you’re likely to give up on the hope of a hair free body and the shiny promises that were made to you. But before you do, let’s take a look at factors that could’ve had a negative impact on your results. Why didn’t laser hair removal work?

How laser hair removal works?

Laser works by emitting heat, that is absorbed by the pigment in your hair and transported to its root. Which is what the heat targets and destroys preventing future hair growth.

However for an effective treatment you have to consider a number of factors. Some of which you may have no control of. Some of which you can influence yourself and have a direct impact on the success of your treatments.

Why did’t laser hair removal work?

Reason 1 – Your treatment wasn’t carried out by laser, but IPL instead.

There are many different machines out there which are less superior yet still advertised as lasers. IPL is commonly mistaken to be a laser even though it doesn’t technically contain a laser. It uses flash lamps that emit light making it less specific for hair removal. This general light may target various components of the skin such as, water, lymph and melanin in the hair, which means the hair isn’t its main target. If you invest your time and money make sure you invest it on the right laser.

You’ll find that the price might be lower, but the risks involved will definitely be higher. And when it comes to your health the measure changes instantly. Would you put yourself at risk knowing that your chances of a reaction are much higher? Would you spend less money on less superior treatments, that may costs you double or triple in the long run while trying to fix potential skin damage and still see no results?

Always do your research and never settle for less than a medical grade laser. Specifically if you have a darker skin tone.

Reason 2 – The laser wasn’t suitable for your specific skin type

While everyone is suitable for laser hair removal, unfortunately not every laser is suitable for all skin types. Sadly my experience is that many Clinics are not able to invest in superior lasers and settle for other options that will put your skin at seriously risk.

When this happens not only every single treatment exposes you to a risk of developing pigmentation, burns and permanent skin damage,  but this also prevents your practitioner using higher levels and advanced settings that would be crucial for your final results.

A Medical grade laser is designed with direct wavelengths that specifically target the melanin in the hair instead of your skin, making the treatments more specific and effective. Always opt for a class 4, medical grade lasers that are classed as gold standard to safely treat all skin types with two wavelengths available. Alexandrite for patient with lighter skin tones and ND Yag for patients with darker skin tones.

In conclusion, choosing the right laser for your skin type will improve your changes of getting the best results while massively reducing the change of you getting skin damage, which in some cases can be permanent.

Reason 3 –  Your treatments were done at wrong intervals

For the laser  to destroy the root, the follicle has to be at a specific stage of its growth. So not too early and not too late. However as not all our follicles are growing at the same speed, we’ll be targeting new hair cycles each time. Which is why we ask you to attend your treatments in every 4-6 weeks. But if we treat too early or miss the cycle the treatment won’t be as effective. For this reason, during your initial consultation we’d encourage you to schedule all your appointments in advance to ensure consistency in your treatment plan.

Reason 4 – You may suffer from underlaying medical conditions

In some cases underlaying medical conditions, such as hormonal imbalance, PCOS may slow down the results of the treatment. As a result you may need more treatments compared to patients without these conditions.
