Are you considering laser hair removal but still have a few unanswered questions regarding the treatment? Like the basic ones such as; how does laser hair removal work? Are you suitable? And when to use laser hair removal? It’s rather simple. And the good news is that most patients are suitable for the laser. Of course the “when” aspect of hair removal could be a topic for discussion and will depend on your overall goals and how much your unwanted hair really bothers you?
What is laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is a medical grade aesthetic treatment, that will help you get rid of your unwanted facial and body hair, painful ingrown hairs, strawberry legs and even keratosis pillars. Over the past 20 years, the treatment has become one of the safest, fastest and most effective way of permanently reducing your hair growth on any areas of your body.
How laser hair removal work?
The lasers work by emitting a concentrated beam of light, which is picked up by the pigment in your hair. The hair transfers this energy straight into the follicle, where the heat kills off your root, enabling future hair growth. For successful hair removal, you’re recommended to do at least 6-10 sessions, at a 4-6 weekly interval.
When to use laser hair removal?
This question has two types of answers in terms of suitability and time reference. So let’s review these below.
In terms of suitability
As long as your hair has pigment that’s is brown or darker, you’re suitable for laser hair removal. Unfortunately the treatment won’t work if you’ve red, white and grey hair. With Cynosure’s adjustable wavelength all skin types are able to receive safe and effective laser hair removal. If you suffer from conditions such as ingrowing hairs, keratosis pilaris, strawberry legs, folliculitis; laser hair removal most certainly will be life altering for you.
In terms of best time to start laser hair removal
It all depends on how fast you want to get rid of you unwanted hair. One of the biggest contraindications to laser, is sun exposure ( UVA & UVB). When you planning your holidays around your treatment, I recommend you to complete your last session at least 2 week before sun exposure. Once you were exposed to the sun, you’d have to wait 4-6 weeks ( depending on your skin tone) to be able to resume your treatment after a successful patch test.
Although this one may be a tricky situation my advice to you is the same as I tell my own patients. If you have to leave a larger gap due to sun exposure between your sessions, as long as it’s a one of occurrence it will not ruin your treatment results. However if you’ve regular large breaks between the treatment, then your expectation of results should be slightly different. Meaning you may need more sessions to achieve the same results as you’d have, if you attended your treatments at the recommended intervals.
I know it is a little sacrifice if you enjoy going on regular sunny breaks, but if you stick to your treatment plan, it will be a short term sacrifice only; where once completed your sessions you won’t have to deny sun exposure for the sake of hair removal ever again. While you can also forget about having hairy legs, bikini or other body parts ever before.
