Can laser hair removal burn skin?

When talking to patients about getting laser hair removal, most of them report that the main reasons why they were cautious about getting started is the fear of medical lasers, the idea of heat, and risk of getting burns as a result. Can laser hair removal burn your skin? What are you chances of getting an adverse reaction? And how to ensure this would never happen to you?

Can laser hair removal burn your skin?

Yes, laser hair removal can leave your skin with adverse reactions, such as burns, blisters, scarring and discolouration. However these reactions are very rare for patients who follow the advice; and understand the protocols when under going laser hair removal. The most important one being sun exposure, sun beds, tanning products.

Sun exposure during laser hair removal

First we advise patients to completely avoid these while undergoing their treatment course. However we understand that life happens, holidays are a must and most patients will have at least 1 holiday booked thorought their treatment journey. In this case, we would advise you to wait at last session at least 2 weeks after your last session and before going in to the sun.

If you had sun or UV light exposure to the area of treatment, our advice ( and medical protocol by Cynosure) is that you must wait 4-6 weeks post sun exposure. After this we can carry out a new patch test for you. And only after a successful skin test; you can then resume your treatments as normal. Although is some cases where patients skin hold the tan longer, further delay may be applied to keep your skin safe.

Other risk factors

Please note that certain medications and herbal remedies can cause increased sensitivity to UV light, and therefore affect the results of laser hair treatments. If you have any concerns, you should always report these to your practitioner before your treatment commences.
