As tattoos are becoming much more common, it’s normal we’re now seeing more and more patients with the art all over their different body parts. And here comes the question; can you have laser hair removal with tattoos? While you can have laser hair removal, unfortunately we’re unable to cover areas of your skin that has a tattoo. Simply because the laser would burn of the ink and permanently damage your tattoo.
How laser hair removal work?
Laser works by emitting a concentrated beam of light, which is attracted by the pigment in your hair and transported to the follicles. Where it destroys the root of your hair. For the treatment to be effective your hair must have pigment.
Will laser hair removal affect tattoos?
Essentially the ink in your tattoo is stored in the skin as pigment. Because of this the laser will be attracted to the ink rather then to your hair. As the result of increased amount of pigment and heat, the laser can damage, distort or completely remove your tattoo. For this reason your practitioner would never cover the surrounding area around tattoos in order to preserve them without damage to the skin and the ink.
Can you do laser hair removal before getting a tattoo?
Absolutely. In fact, when patients discuss getting a tattoo at Skin Perfection, London’s award winning skin and laser hair removal Clinic, my advice is to get their removed permanently first and then get the tattoo, This way you dont have to worry about your hair after the tattoo has been done and can enjoy the art on a smooth and silky skin, rather then suffering from rashes, ingrowing hair on the area.
