What happens when laser hair removal goes wrong? Clearly not something you would want to experience after investing your hard earned money and time into the process. Which you’ve entered with high hopes at the beginning. So what should you do if the treatment didn’t live up to the expectations?
When laser hair removal goes wrong
At Skin Perfection, London’s award winning skin and laser hair removal Clinic we make educating our patients a priority. Not only this will safe guide you throughout the course, but will give you a good understanding of what should you expect and how to keep your skin safe between treatments. So there is no disappointment at the end and the risk of developing a reaction is minimal.
How laser hair removal works?
Laser works by emitting heat, that is absorbed by the pigment in your hair and transported to its root. Which is what the heat targets and destroys preventing future hair growth.
However for an effective treatment you have to consider a number of factors. Some of which you may have no control of. Some of which you can influence yourself and have a direct impact on the success of your treatments.
Why didn’t laser hair removal work?
Your treatment wasn’t carried out by laser, but IPL instead.
There are many different machines out there which are less superior yet still advertised as lasers. IPL is commonly mistaken to be a laser even though it doesn’t technically contain a laser. It uses flash lamps that emit light making it less specific for hair removal. You’ll find that the price might be lower, but the risks involved will definitely be higher. Specifically if you have a darker skin tone.
The laser wasn’t suitable for your specific skin type.
While everyone is suitable for laser hair removal, unfortunately not every laser is suitable for all skin types. A Medical grade laser is designed with direct wavelengths that specifically target the melanin in the hair instead of your skin, making the treatments more specific and effective. Always opt for a class 4, medical grade lasers that are classed as gold standard to safely treat all skin types with two wavelengths available. Alexandrite for patient with lighter skin tones and ND Yag for patients with darker skin tones. In conclusion, choosing the right laser for your skin type will improve your changes of getting the best results while massively reducing the change of you getting skin damage, which in some cases can be permanent.
Your treatments were done at wrong intervals.
For best results you should attend your treatments in every 4-6 weeks.
May be you just didn’t have enough treatments
During the initial consultation it’s important to set clear expectations and for you as a patient to understand we can never guarantee how many session you may need.
And even different parts of your body can require different amount of treatments. But in general we recommend at least 8 treatments if you never had laser before. With the understanding that top up sessions may be needed, but will depend on your body’s response to the treatment.
You may suffer from underlaying medical conditions
In some cases underlaying medical conditions, such as hormonal imbalance, PCOS may slow down the results of the treatment. As a result you may need more treatments compared to patients without these conditions.
