Just because some parts of skin is covered with hair it doesn’t mean the skin underneath doesn’t require regular care. But in reality most men forget about skincare; let alone the skin under the beard. And so no wonder most male patients report dry, flaky, irritated and itchy skin. To ensure you don’t suffer from none of these side effect, it’s crucial to build a grooming regimen; that not only nourishes your beard, but also supports the skin and follicles beneath it all.
Skincare with a beard is not that different from skincare without a beard
Although applying a thick, heavy moisturiser on top of your beard, can seem like an impossible task, you just need a little alteration in your skincare routine.
How to do skincare with a beard
Choose a cleanser that hydrates and nourishes your skin, rather one that dries the skin and ends up causing irritation and dandruff.
My patient’s favourite is Epionce Lytic gel cleanser. It removes skin impurities without disrupting the intercellular lipids and cells that form the natural protective barrier. The lytic gel cleanser removed dirt, oil and make up without irritation or over drying the skin. It’s also great if you tend to get breakouts and have a sensitive skin as its fragrance and parabens free. Many of my patients use this as a shaving gel too as well as their face wash.
Exfoliation will prevent dryness and itchiness.
Just like the skin on the rest of your body, the skin under your bread, can dry out causing you irritation. As well as cleansing is important you should also exfoliate your skin under the beard at least on a weekly basis to gentle remove the build of dead skin cells. Serums with ingredients such as glycol, salysilic and lactic acid are great to gently exfoliate without using hard scrubs and disrupting your healthy skin barrier
Have you ever tried to moisturise your beard?
Typically what happens is the product gets clumped up on your beard and hardly able to reach your skin. But if you swap a moisturiser for a beard oil over the beard only the outcome will be a lot more different. So you can still and should use normal moisturiser on cheeks and forehead all the way up to the hair/beard line. But for the beard directly use beard oils. Beard oil easily reaches your skin, absorbs just as simply, and also hydrates the hair too. In this process it strengthens and softens them, preventing breakage and itching. Only drip a few drops on your fingertips and then massage them across your skin (under the beard). Finally comb through it all to evenly distribute the oils around your beard.
Be mindful of how you groom your beard.
Always shave in the direction of the hair growth. To help cut down on inflammation you should be changing your razor blade ever two to three shaves
Finally SPF
Make sure any parts of your face that is not covered by hair you apply SPF daily to prevent sun damage and pigmentation.
