Laser hair removal vs dermaplaning

Laser hair removal vs dermaplaning? What’s the difference and is one better than the other? Well it all depends on the colour and texture of your hair. These will be ultimately determining which treatment would you be a more suitable candidate for. And although both treatments are suitable for hair removal, they’re a different technique at the end of the day.

Laser hair removal vs dermaplaning. What is the main difference?

Laser hair removal destroys your hair follicles enabling future hair growth. The treatment is more permanent and in general you need about 8 sessions. However laser won’t work if you have too fine or light hair. The reason is that light hair won’t able to attract the laser and the energy would waste away on the surface of the skin.

And this is where dermaplaning can be your alternative for facial hair removal that is light and too fine. During dermaplaning a sharp and sterile surgical blade  gently slides over the skin at a 45-degree angle; this draws away all unwanted dead skin cells and fine facial hairs, leaving the surface extremely smooth and radiant. Clean and smooth skin, free of dead skin cells and peach fuzz, allows for greater penetration of skincare products, also creating a beautifully even canvas for makeup to glide on flawlessly. This kind of hair is located mainly on the face and is very light in colour and texture, therefore laser would not be able to remove it. The treatment would be repeated at every 4 weeks, but there would not be permanent results like you get with laser hair removal, so its more of a  managing the amount of hair.

Can you have laser hair removal as well as dermaplaning at the same time?

Yes, you can. At Skin Perfection London, we have many patients who treat their body areas with laser, however as their facial hair is too light, they are treating this area with dermaplaning. Which is still much better than the traditional shaving or waxing. As this way they get the added benefit of a clearer, smoother skin without the risk of getting ingrowing hairs or spots.

If you’re a laser hair removal patient and choose not to shave your hair, dermaplaining before your laser treatment can be a great alternative. This way not only your facial hair is removed but also the top dead layers of the skin. The added benefit of dermaplaining before laser hair removal is actually better penetration for the laser energy.
