Are you excited to get started with laser hair removal? Finally chosen the clinic you’d like to attend but not sure what’s next? First t you should get a skin test, which I assume the Clinic you’ve chosen offers before treating you. Once the test is out the way you’re ready to get your first session done, but with so much information to remember you may be unsure how to prepare for your laser treatment? What to do before? And how to get the best results with your treatment? At Skin Perfection, London’s award winning skin and laser hair removal Clinic we emphasise the importance of pre treatment care; and advise our patients during their consultation of the below.
Laser hair removal – What to do before?
Never treat without a patch test.
A patch test is an indication that your skin is reacting well to the laser treatment. Your treatment can be booked, should you decide to go ahead, after your patch test has been carried out. For lighter skin tones 48 hours and for darker skin tones we need to wait 7 days.
Tanning and Sun Exposure
You’d be advised NOT tan or expose to direct sunlight or artificial sunlight- 6 weeks before and in-between your sessions. You should always inform your practitioner if you’ve had any sun exposure or artificial sunlight; in which case the area to be treated will need to wait the full six weeks and then be re-patch test on appropriate levels for that specific skin type.
If you used tanning products please make sure you wait at least 3 weeks and make sure your product is completely removed.
Changes in medication or existing medical conditions
It is important to reveal any medication you’re taking even if you feel it’s irrelevant to laser treatment so your practitioner can advise you what is ok and safe to be on, whilst having laser treatment. It’s equally important that you disclose any medical or health conditions and again your consultant will advise you accordingly whether you’re a suitable candidate. Or if we require a doctors note for approval or last resort advise against treatment.
Prepping your hair for treatment
In preparation for your treatment, you should only ever shave, cut or trim the hair. But never wax, epilate or use hair removal creams. The idea is that the laser has to destroy your hair follicle, so you just want to remove the hair above the skin to avoid burns, but leave the follicles in tact underneath the skin.
If you wax directly before laser treatment you’d remove the follicle, which means there is nothing left for the laser to destroy so the energy just waste away on the surface of the skin.
