Laser hair removal has been around for a while now, but for some patients the concept still feels like a strange one. And perhaps a scary one as its sounds very medical. And even though the treatment is a medical procedure, it’s a lot more straight forward than you’d think. As long as you are being treated by a trained and experienced professional, using the safest laser for your skin type you should have nothing to worry about. But there are a lot questions and answers you may still looking to learn about laser hair removal; and so I have compiled the main ones for you below.
Laser hair removal questions and answers
How does laser hair removal work?
As the laser passes over the treatment area, the light is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair. Laser hair treatment is most effective when the hair is in its active growth phase. The light energy is converted to heat in the active hair follicle beneath the skin, permanently and safely retarding the growth of the hairs without damaging the surrounding skin tissue.
Who is suitable for hair laser removal?
Laser hair removal treatment is suitable for all skin types but will not work for clients with blonde, grey or white hairs as there is little or no pigment in the hair follicle for the laser to target.
Generally speaking, the darker and thicker the hair, the faster the response to treatment among clients and the better the results.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Most of our clients cope well with the treatment and say that it’s much easier than waxing!
The sensation is described as being like a little pinprick, with a heat sensation that stops immediately after the laser has been fired.
Are there any side effects?
The most common side effect of laser hair removal among our clients is erythema (redness) in the skin of the treated area, as lasers target hair follicles, which some clients describe as feeling like mild sunburn. This sensation can last for as little as 30 minutes. But for most patients the skin fully recovers over the course of a few hours. Applying an aloe vera gel to your skin immediately after treatment can help with recovery.
How many sessions will you need?
A full course of 8 to 11 sessions will result in a permanent reduction of hair growth.
However, many of our patients see remarkable results even after the first session, depending on the individual’s circumstances. These include, but are not limited to; hair type, hair colour, skin tone, medication, genetic variation, hormones, patient compliance and tolerance to the treatment.
How often will you need to attend your treatments?
For best results you should treat facial areas every 4 weeks and body areas in every 6 weeks.
