What type of acne do I have?

Anyone can experience acne at any age. from being a teenager through to adult acne. A case of acne can be mild, moderate or severe. Not everyone with acne will develop acne scarring. But most acne sufferers will see a few acne scars at some point in their life.

Mild acne

When you have mild acne, you usually see whiteheads or blackheads with a few red bumps. This form of acne is less irritated than more severe acne forms.Acne treatments

Moderate acne

You will see more widespread whiteheads and blackheads then you do with mild acne. Moderate acne also causes more papules and pimples filled with puss (pustules).

Severe acne

If you have a severe case of acne, you are likely to see painful puss-filled bumps called nodules or cysts. They sit below the surface of your skin.

Most of the time, any marks left from acne will heal and clear over time. However, with severe acne or cystic acne, you are more likely to leave permanent scarring as it starts the healing process.

You are also more likely to develop permanent acne scarring if you pick or squeeze your acne. You should always treat your acne and allow it to heal naturally.

Types of acne scars

Acne scars can come in different forms. Some types of acne scarring are more difficult to treat than others. Here are the most common types of acne scars:

Atrophic Scars

Atrophic scars are also called pitted scars as they are indented in appearance. These types of scars heal below the surface of the skin. atrophic scars are the most common type of acne scars.

Hypertrophic scars and keloid scars

Both of these types of acne scars are raised lumps of scar tissue, which take the place of the area the acne once was.

Hypertrophic scars are the same size as the acne, whereas keloid scars form and grow much larger than the site of the original acne.

These types of acne scars are more common in people with darker skin tones.

Ice pick scars

Ice pick scars are small, narrow indentations that point down into the skin. You are likely to find this type of acne scar on the cheeks. They are tough to treat and require a more persistent form of treatment.

Boxcar scars

They get their name as they look like indented boxes. They usually form on the lower cheeks and jaw on people who have severe and widespread acne.

Rolling scars

Rolling scars vary in depth and have sloped edges. This is why the skin can appear wavy and uneven.

What is the best acne scar treatment?

At Skin Perfection, we offer a range of acne scarring treatments. Finding the right acne scar treatments can feel challenging, but with the help of our skin experts, you will find the one that’s right for you.

Laser skin resurfacing treatment

Laser resurfacing treatment helps to improve your skin texture and tone to reveal healthy skin. It does this by emitting tiny beams of intense heat below the surface of the skin. Laser resurfacing helps by stimulating collagen production, which helps breakdown and minimise acne scars.

who is this suitable for?

It is a great acne scar treatment for anyone with a lighter skin tone who have pitted acne scars. If you have a darker skin tone, you may want to look at our microneedling treatment.

Laser photo-facial skin rejuvenation

An ideal treatment for reducing skin inflammation, redness and reducing pore size. The laser photo-facial treatment helps to provide you with a glowing complexion that looks and feels more healthy than before.

Who is this suitable for?

This acne scarring treatment is suited to anyone with a lighter skin tone up to light skin type 4. It works well with a skin peel to help fight acne causing bacteria. This helps to tackle further acne breakouts.

LED light therapy

Dermalux LED Phototherapy uses pure light energy at different wavelengths to promote elastin and collagen production. It does this with no downtime and no discomfort. It has three colour wavelengths; red, blue and yellow.

Yellow – stimulates the production of new collagen

Red – helps to balance the skin

Blue – address acne causing bacteria in the skin

Who is this suitable for?

Most people will benefit from this treatment. We see patients get great results from led light therapy. During your consultation we will discuss whether this treatment or another acne scar treatment will work best for you.

Does acne scarring treatment hurt?

Most acne scarring treatments are comfortable and require very little downtime. With the laser skin resurfacing treatment, you will feel small, hot pinpricks. For this treatment, we will apply a numbing cream before your session to make it more comfortable for you.
