When does acne lead to acne scarring?

It can be frustrating when acne scars serve as a reminder of past acne breakouts. Understanding why they form and what acne scar treatments are available is the first step to achieving smoother and clearer skin.

Acne scars are the result of the body’s wound-healing response after an acne lesion. Not all acne will lead to acne scarring. Here are a few reasons why acne scars form:

Inflammation

When pimples cause inflammation in the surrounding skin, it can trigger your body to produce more collagen. While this is vital to wound healing, it can also lead to scar tissue forming.

Skin types

People with a darker skin tone are more likely to develop acne scars. This is not to say that people with lighter skin types do not suffer from acne scarring. But darker skin types can experience an increase in melanin production during the healing process. This can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Severe acne

If you suffer from severe acne for long periods of time, you are at a higher risk of developing acne scars. Acne cysts, which involve deep inflammation are commonly associated with acne scarring.

Picking your spots and pimples

Squeezing or popping your pimples can make inflammation worse and damage the surrounding skin. It can also disrupt the healing process, which increases your chances of seeing acne scars.

Your genes

If your family has a history of acne breakouts which lead to acne scarring, then the chances are that you will be more prone to acne scars.

What are the different types of acne scars?

Not all acne scars are the same. This is why it is important to know what the different types of acne scars are so that we can help you find the best acne scarring treatment for you and your skin.

Atrophic scars

Atrophic scars are also known as pitted acne scars or depressed scars. This is because when the acne scar goes through the healing process, it creates an indent on the skin’s surface. There are there types:

  1.     Ice pick scars: this type of acne scar looks like small puncture marks on your skin. They are deep, narrow and appear as small V-shaped indentations.
  2.     Boxcar scars: unlike ice pick scars, Boxcar scars are wider and have a rectangular shape with vertical sides.
  3.     Rolling scars: If you have rolling scars, you will notice a wavy or rolling appearance on your skin. They form because connective tissues pull down on the skin to create an uneven texture.

Hypertrophic scars and Keloid scars

Hypertrophic scars occur because of tissue loss. This causes the body to overly produce collagen during the healing process. As a result, you see raised and thickened areas of scar tissue, which sit on the surface of your skin.

Keloid scars are similar to hypertrophic scars in that they both form because of excessive collagen production during the body’s natural healing process. However, keloid scars are different because they spread beyond the site of the acne wound to the surrounding skin.

If you are not sure what type of acne scarring you have, that is where our skin experts can help. At your consultation, we will assess your skin and develop a personalised treatment plan to help reduce the appearance of your acne scars.

What is the best way to treat acne scarring in London?

At Skin Perfection, we have a number of treatment options to help treat acne scars. they may include one or a combination of the following:

Laser skin resurfacing

Laser resurfacing treatment works by sending tiny beams of intense heat into the deeper layers of your skin. This removes the outer layers of damaged skin, while also stimulating collagen production. As a result, it helps to break down acne scars and minimise their appearance. After a course of treatment, you will see skin that looks more even and healthier than before.

Laser photo-facial skin rejuvenation

This is an ideal treatment for helping to reduce inflammation, redness and pore size. The laser photo-facial treatment stimulates your skin’s natural healing process. This helps to smooth your skin and give it a more radiant glow. It also targets and destroys acne-causing bacteria to help prevent any further acne breakouts.

Dermalux LED light therapy

LED light therapy works by using wavelengths of light to target different layers of the skin. This helps to stimulate collagen and elastin production, which repairs damaged skin tissue and reduces the appearance of acne scars. It is also suitable for most skin tones and skin types and requires minimal downtime.

It has three different colour wavelengths, each tackling a different skin concern:

Yellow – stimulates the elastin and collagen production

Red – helps to balance and even out your skin tone

Blue – addresses acne-causing bacteria

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers can help add volume and plumpness to your skin. They do this by adding hydration to your skin through their key ingredient – hyaluronic acid. Dermal fillers involve injecting a gel-like substance into your skin which can fill pitted scars.

While dermal filler is not a scar removal treatment, it can significantly reduce the appearance of acne scars.  When combined with laser treatments they can improve the overall texture of your skin.

Next steps

Not all acne scars can have the same treatment and not all skin types will be suitable for laser acne scar removal treatments.

That’s why we ensure every patient has an in-depth consultation with one of our practitioners. This is where we will assess your skin, look at your medical history and work with you to develop a treatment plan that will help you deliver the results you want.
