Sadly the harsh truth is that most of us can probably expect some form of hair loss at some stage in our life. This is because the hair follicles are developed already at the fetal growth stage. Some of those follicles, will naturally become dormant with age. Meaning they will stop producing hair. Although often thought of as a male problem, hair loss affects both men and women, as well as children. However, Androgenetic Alopecia (male pattern baldness) does occur more commonly in men.
What may affect hair loss?
Different triggers can affect hair loss and the way our hair grows and some of these can be from:
- pregnancy
- hormones
- diet
- rapid weight loss
- stress
- illness
- medications, in particular chemotherapy drugs, including the contraceptive pill, anti-coagulants and anti-convulsants
- any auto-immune disease that leads to “Alopecia Areata”
- hair shaft abnormalities ( just by simply wearing hats, scarfs, and tight hair band styles or even having extensions, can put long term stress to the hair follicles which can lead to scar tissue to the hair follicles.
Getting to the root of the problem

Understanding the phases of hair growth is essential in understanding your hair loss. There are 3 phases in total:
1. Anagen – “The Growing Stage”. At the anagen stage the cells in the hair bulb are dividing rapidly. Sometimes you may notice you cannot grow your hair past a certain length. This may be because your hair is in the anagen stage for a shorter period of time. Typically your hair is in this phase for 2-7 years. If your hair stays for closer to 7 years, you will be able to grow your hair for longer. Most of the hair on your head is in the catogen stage (80-90%).
2. Catagen -“The Transition Stage”.After the anagen stage or growing stage has ended your hair enters a transition phase. It stays attached to your head but doesn’t keep growing. This lasts approx 2-3 weeks on average. The hair then detaches itself from the blood supply. This hair is now called a club hair. Each hair undergoes this process at a different time, with only about 3% of your total hairs being club hairs.
3. Telogen -“The Resting Stage”. Your club hairs will continue to stay in place for around 3 months. During this time, new hairs begin to grow underneath. This is called the telogen phase. Finally your club hairs start to fall out and the new hair starts to poke through. About 6-8% of your hairs are at this stage.
It is important to note that each follicle and hair will be up to a different stage at any given time. Shedding approximately 50-100 hairs a day is within what’s considered “the average range”.

Alopecia hair loss treatment protocol
Step 1 – Dermapen 4™ is used to create thousands of micro-channels in your scalp that will deliver active ingredients, 80% deeper into the skin than regular topical applications or other pens on the market. The underlying cells absorb the benefits and this will trigger angiogenesis which creates a stronger capillary network to feed the hair.
Step 2 – Your practitioner will select an appropriate solution after consultation for you to help regenerate your hair growth. The mechanical process of pen like device will break down any scar tissue.
Because of the even distribution and the consistency of the pen and needles infusing the selected solutions into the skin, it’s more effective than standalone “meso-therapy” which is solely relying on one needle and the injector having to distribute the product evenly.
