About skin tone and discolouration

What affects skin tone?

One of the main ways that we judge our appearance is by the colour and texture of our skin – our skin tone. The more even the colour and smoother the texture, the younger we appear and more attractive we feel.

But there are a number of factors that affect skin tone anywhere on the face and body, due to changes in the distribution of melanin (skin pigmentation or colouring) or the amount of collagen and elastin (which gives skin its volume and texture).

Sun damage

The effect of sun and free radical damage is a major cause of change in skin tone.

Long periods of exposure to UV rays from sunlight can cause damage to skin cells.

This may lead to darker patches called ‘age spots’ or ‘liver spots’ appearing particularly on the face and hands, and can reduce levels of collagen and elastin so that skin sags and wrinkles prematurely.

Other causes

There are other causes of skin discolouration or pigmentation, such as birthmarks and melasma (often called the ‘mask of pregnancy’) in which light or dark brown areas develop - particularly on the face - in a cluster or big patch rather than as spots or freckles.

Most such conditions are not harmful or uncomfortable in themselves, but they are important cosmetically and understandably can be upsetting for anyone affected by them.

While we can’t always stop some of the signs of ageing skin, such as fine lines and wrinkles, we can do much to maintain a healthy and youthful skin tone and reduce these unwanted signs.
