Different types of benign pigmented lesions and vascular lesions
There is often confusion between pigmented and vascular lesions. But whilst they are different, they both respond well to laser treatment.
Vascular lesions
If you have patches of skin that look red, blue or purple, these are known as vascular lesions. They are the result of broken or ruptured blood vessels under the skin. you can have them from birth, or you can develop them later on in life.
Benign vascular lesions do not always require medical treatment; however, you may want to seek cosmetic treatment to reduce their appearance.
Common types of vascular lesions
- Broken blood vessels
- Facial veins
- Thread veins on the legs and body
- Rosacea
A pigmented lesion
Pigmented lesions are black, brown or blue in colour. They can be the result of changes in your body or an injury which leads to your skin becoming darker, or sometimes lighter in colour. You may see darker patches on the skin form in one small area or multiple areas of the face and body.
Common types of pigmented lesions
- Age spots or sun spots – from excessive sun exposure
- Freckles
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation – from injury or trauma to the skin
- Melasma – most often the result of hormonal changes during pregnancy
Treating pigmented lesions with laser therapy
There are so many laser treatments on the market that it can be confusing to know which one is right for you.
The Q-switched alexandrite laser is the most common type of laser for tattoo removal. It uses short bursts of laser energy to remove blue, black and green pigment from tattoos.
Pulsed dye laser treatments use one wavelength of laser light to target one specific skin condition. Pulse lasers treat conditions such as inflammation, rosacea and thread veins.
At Skin Perfection, we use the Palomar Starlux 500 laser by Cynosure. This uses both laser technology and intense pulsed light (IPL) to target multiple skin concerns in one treatment. It is a great laser treatment for both vascular and pigmented lesions. This includes sun damage, hyperpigmentation and ageing skin.
Laser photo-facial skin rejuvenation treatment
The laser photo-facial treatment uses a specific amount of light energy to target any brown lesions or dark spots in the skin. It is a go-to laser treatment for tackling sun-damaged skin, freckles and other forms of skin discolouration. It is also an effective treatment for red lesions such as spider veins and rosacea.
The device has a cooling tip to make the treatment more comfortable. The laser is gentle enough that it does not cause damage to the surface of your skin. The treatment requires very little downtime, which means it is easy to fit into a bust schedule.
The laser photo-facial treatment also uses heat to stimulate collagen and elastin production. This helps to strengthen your skin and make it more plump and full. This is why we also use this treatment to reduce acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles.
After a course of treatment, you will achieve skin that looks brighter, healthier and clearer than before.
Who is suitable for this laser treatment?
Anyone with a lighter skin type should be suitable for this treatment. We will always do a patch test first to ensure the treatment is right for you. If you have darker skin, your practitioner will discuss another treatment option such as microneedling and/or skin peels.
Give your results a boost with a skin peel
If you want to get the most out of your laser treatment results, we suggest combining it with a course of light chemical peels.
Light skin peels a couple of weeks before laser treatments can help prepare your skin by exfoliating the skin and removing dead skin cells. This can help the laser tackle your specific concerns more effectively, which will give you optimal results.
At your consultation, your laser practitioner will discuss whether this option will work for you. They will also develop a tailored treatment package that will address your skin concerns and leave you with skin that glows and looks healthy.
