What causes acne scarring?
Acne affects men and women of all ages. Acne scars tend to develop after a complication with acne. While any spot can lead to scar scars, they are more common in people with severe acne breakouts such as cystic acne. This is because cystic acne causes bumps to form underneath your skin which can burst and damage the surrounding skin.
There are different types of scars and not all acne scars look the same. You may develop scars that are pitted or indented beneath your skin tissue.
Another type of acne scarring is when you see raised lumps of scar tissue. This is also recognised as keloid scars or hypertrophic scars which form as a result of the acne healing process.
You may also want to know – are acne scars permanent? Mild acne is unlikely to cause acne scars. However, if you pick or squeeze your acne this can result in permanent scarring.
The main types of acne scars
If you suffer from severe acne breakouts, you are likely to develop atrophic acne scars. The three main types of atrophic post-acne scars are:
Boxcar
Acne scars that look like craters within the skin. They can be round or oval in shape and typically form on the cheeks and across the jawline.
Ice pick acne scars
Acne scars that look like a narrow, sharp object has pierced your skin. You are likely to see ice pick scars on your cheeks.
Rolling scars
Rolling acne scars can vary in depth. They are the results of bands of scar tissue that form under the skin. They give your skin an uneven appearance and appear mostly on your cheeks.
Treating acne scars
For mild or moderate acne scars such as keloid scarring, a course of laser resurfacing or laser therapy treatment can be a great option. Laser resurfacing works best on newer acne scars rather than older scarring. Laser treatments are also suitable for helping to reduce the appearance of surgical scars.
For atrophic scars, you may need a combination of microneedling treatments and chemical peels. You will also need a longer course of treatment to see a reduction in your acne scars. Your practitioner will talk you through your treatment options during your consultation.
How does microneedling treat acne scars?
Microneedling for acne scars is a popular way to help break down scar tissue and reduce the appearance of acne scarring.
Skin needling or microneedling works by using tiny needles to puncture the skin. By doing this, it helps to stimulate collagen production in your skin. This is why the treatment is also known as collagen induction therapy.
As we age, our skin does not produce collagen at the same rate as when we are younger. This causes our skin to look more fragile and thin. Microneedling helps to produce new collagen, which helps to improve your skin texture and plump or smooth out acne scars.
At Skin Perfection, we use the Dermapen microneedling device. Dermapen offers a faster and more comfortable treatment experience than the traditional derma-roller method. It also allows your practitioner to target smaller areas of your face and treat your acne scars more precisely.
What are the benefits of microneedling?
Aside from helping to reduce scarring, microneedling is effective in:
- Treating active acne
- Reducing oil production
- Minimising fine lines and wrinkles
- Helping to treat an uneven skin tone and uneven skin texture
- Providing full skin rejuvenation for a glowing complexion
- Works on all skin types including darker skin tones
How many microneedling sessions will I need?
This will depend on the level of acne scarring that you need to treat. On average, our patients have around 6 microneedling sessions. At your consultation, your practitioner will assess your skin and work with you to develop a course of treatment that will provide you with the best results.
