What is skin pigmentation?

Skin pigmentation refers to the colour of your skin. Everyone has a different skin colour, which is the result of a natural pigment in the skin known as melanin.

People with darker skin tones tend to produce more melanin than people with lighter skin tones. On top of your skin colour, melanin also helps to give your eyes and hair their colour.

When melanin production changes in your skin, you may see a more uneven skin tone or dark patches of skin start to appear.

What causes changes in my skin tone?

One of the main causes of unwanted skin pigmentation or an uneven skin tone is when your body starts to produce too much melanin. This skin condition is known as hyperpigmentation.

This type of skin pigmentation issue can appear on different areas of the body including the face. Skin discolouration from hyperpigmentation can look like brown, black, grey, red or pink spots. The most common types of hyperpigmentation are age spots, sun spots and freckles.

Some of the main causes of this include:

  •       Too much sun exposure and not protecting your skin from UV light
  •       Certain medications can increase skin pigmentation and lead to darker patches of skin
  •       Health conditions such as Addison’s disease
  •       Skin injuries or inflammation such as breakouts and acne scars (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation)
  •       If you have a family history of unwanted skin pigmentation

Targeted skin pigmentation treatments in London

Laser photo-facial skin rejuvenation treatment

This is a great laser treatment for targeting and removing unwanted pigmentation while also giving your skin a boost. It works wonders in treating sun spots and age spots, reducing inflammation and helping you achieve a more even skin tone and skin texture.

Our laser photo-facial treatment uses light energy to target dark spots, sun spots, or liver spots. The laser also uses heat to promote collagen and elastin production, which strengthens your skin and can plump and fill acne scarring.

Who is suitable for laser treatment?

This is a safe and effective hyperpigmentation treatment for most people. However, darker skin types are not suitable for this treatment. If you have darker skin, your practitioner will discuss alternative treatment options with you.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels also known as skin peels work well as a standalone treatment or in combination with laser treatments. They come in different strengths, which means they can target different types of skin pigmentation.

Deep skin peels are great for anyone with acne scarring or sun-damaged skin. the work by exfoliating the skin and penetrating the deeper layers of the skin. As a result, they help to reduce pigmentation while also revealing new and healthy skin cells.

Who is suitable for chemical peels?

There is a chemical peel to suit most skin types. Lighter peels work on all skin tones, whereas deep peels do not always work on people with dark skin. You will need to speak with one of our skin experts at our London clinic before moving forward with any treatment.

Microneedling

At our London skin clinic, we use Dermapen microneedling treatment. It works by using a pen-like device with tiny needles to create micro punctures in the skin. By doing this, it triggers your body’s wound-healing response and triggers collagen and elastin production.

Dermapen allows us to directly target specific areas where you are seeing dark patches of skin forming. By increasing collagen production in your skin, this treatment helps to improve the overall appearance of your skin. More specifically, it helps to smooth your skin, create a more even skin tone and give it more of a healthy look.

Who is suitable for microneedling?

Microneedling treatment works well on most skin tones. We often use this treatment for people with darker skin types where laser treatment is not the best option.
