Our hairs grow in three stages. The best stage to treat the hair is at the active stage. The laser beam that is placed over the treated area is a cumulated beam of light, which is absorbed by melanin or pigment in the hair. This reduces the active hair follicle that we all have underneath the skin. The light energy coverts the energy into heat which goes right down to the bulb of the hair, safely without damaging the surrounding skin tissue and permanently retarding the hair growth of the hairs.
Who is suitable?
Our laser hair removal treatment is suitable for all skin types, however is not suitable for patients that have blonde, grey or white hairs as there is no pigment in the hair follicle for the laser to pick up and that is its target. Generally speaking, the darker and thicker the hair the better the result and faster the response to the treatment.
How many sessions do I need?
A full course of 6 to 9 sessions will result in a permanent reduction of hair growth. After the first session our patients usually see remarkable results. This depends on the individual's circumstances, including the following but not limited to: hair type, hair colour, skin tone, medication, genetic variation, hormones, patient compliance and tolerance to the treatment. All will be discussed at consultation with your laser specialists. Only the practitioners that carry out the procedures and have had procedures themselves will personally conduct your consultation and will guide you each step of the way.
Does it hurt?
Generally speaking most of our patients cope extremely well with the treatment and claim that it is much easier than waxing! The laser sensation is described as being a little pinprick feeling with a heat sensation which stops straight after the laser has been fired. At Skin Perfection we have invested in Cynosures Cyro Cool Glides which the practitioners connect to the laser hand piece. Whilst your laser treatment is carried out, a comfortable cool air will blow at the skin, along and making the treatment more pleasant for our patients.
Will I need a consultation and test patch?
You will need a consultation and patch test before you go ahead with any laser treatments. This enables our laser experts to determine the following:
if you are suitable
to discuss the procedure, potential out come and potential side effects involved and what is expected of you
to carry out a general inspection of the proposed treatment area
to carry out a small patch test with the laser on the selected levels most suitable for your skin type and to ensure no adverse reactions happen or occur
home skincare.
What are the side effects?
For most of our patients the most common side effect is erythema (redness) to the skin and treated area. This is usually short lived and the skin usually recovers within a few hours and as a little as 30 minutes reported from some of our patients which is great as you can usually return straight back to your usual activities. Aloe vera gel or our Post Treatment Balm including our fantastic Medical Barrier Cream may be applied directly after treatment to aid the recovery of the skin post procedure. All of which are available at the laser clinic to purchase.
How often will I need treatment?
All patients should have their first course of treatments on a regular basis. On average we recommend our patients to have facial areas treated every 4 weeks and body areas every 6 weeks. We would always recommend a course of six treatments to be commenced constructively at the treatment intervals above in order to obtain the best result.
How should I prepare for the treatment?
Our patents should not do the following:
wax
thread
pluck
epilate or
do any form of hair removal that pulls the hair from the root.
If you have done any of the above it is advisable to wait a few weeks as we need the roots available to destroy them with our laser.
You are recommended to simply shave or trim the hairs, however please leave the purposed areas to be treated for consultation only, so your laser practitioner can access the response and if those hairs will be suitable to treat.
Once you have completed the laser test patch and consultation you will be asked to shave only or trim only in between, (which will get less and less as you go). The hairs must be removed before we laser them preferable one day before your appointment.
Patients must also follow our policy of no sun exposure to the treated areas only as this may decrease your result and efficacy of the treatment and increases their risk to adverse reactions and complications. If you have had recent sun to the area, including artificial sun exposure or sunbeds we recommend you wait a minimum of 4 weeks before you can be treated and in some circumstances be re test patched to the areas if there is still a tan present.
Certain medications and herbal remedies can make you light sensitive but if in doubt please call the clinic. Your laser practitioner will carry out a full screening at consultation to discuss in more detail.
What aftercare is available?
After the procedure is completed our practitioners always advise you your aftercare regardless how many times you have been in. The main things to remember are the following;
No heat stimulation
No saunas/steam rooms
No hot baths or showers
No exercise or swimming
Full advice and aftercare will be provided at your consultation including a client guide, detailing precautions and what to do before, during and after the procedure and our clinic contact number to call anytime when we are open, to answer any questions or queries you may have.
Laser hair removal - step by step guide
First step
After your initial consultation and test patch, provided you have responded well and you are happy to go ahead (24-48hrs post test patch) your first session would have been booked and commence.
Your laser practitioner will clean the area and remove any hairs you were unable to shave or remove and mark out the area with our gridding system to ensure each and every part you have paid for receives treatment and so we do not miss any hairs.
If you have any moles, tattoos or beauty spots these will be covered. You will then be given protective eyewear to protect the eyes and avoid the laser light that flashes.
Second Step
Once the laser has been set according to your test patch and to that you responded best at, your laser practitioner will start to commence your laser treatment, counting you in before she fires the first shot and will assess how it feels on a scale of 1-10. If all is ok your laser practitioner will continue to deliver your laser treatment until completed.
Third Step
After the laser is completed, the skin may appear slightly red or tense, some people report in worse cases it feels like mild sunburn. Your laser practitioner will apply aloe vera gel to the treated area. if you need further cooling you will be welcomed to stay in the clinic and cool the area down with cool packs until the skin has calmed down and until you feel ready and comfortable to leave. Generally patients are ok with simply aloe applied post procedure. The redness and heat sensation seems to resolve quickly and in normal circumstances you will begin to notice a difference in the hair growth as fast as the first session has past.
