How can I get the best results out of my laser hair removal?

1. I tell all my patients to start with consistency.

Laser hair removal works in sync with your hair growth cycle. That means every 4-6 weeks is your sweet spot. Not whenever-you-remember or feel up to it. Waiting too long between sessions lets treated follicles recover, and that’s the opposite of what you want.

2. Next I beg of you, please shave, and don’t wax.

Laser needs the follicle in place to do its job. Waxing, tweezing, epilating? They all remove the follicle and give the laser nothing to target. Shaving is your friend. It keeps the root intact but trims the surface, making your session more comfortable and more effective.

3. And lastly which a lot of people don’t like to hear, is skipping the tan.
Sun exposure before your treatment makes your skin super sensitive and prone to reactions such as burning, scarring and pigmentation. Sun beds and self-tanners? Same problem. Keep the area pale, protected and use SPF daily if you don’t want to slow down your treatment journey. If you have been in the sun you’ll have to wait 4-6 weeks ( depending on your skin tone which you practitioner will advise you) before you can resume treatment. Which means essentially you are skipping a whole growth cycle of hairs.

You’ll also want to skip harsh exfoliants and active acids (like retinoids or glycolic peels) 2–3 days before and after your appointment. Laser makes the skin a little more delicate, so the last thing you want is to irritate before treatment.

What you do matters more than you think

You can have the most advanced medical-grade laser in the world. You can be treated by an experienced specialist. But if you wax between sessions, tan too often, or miss appointments, you will slow down your results and treatment progress.

And I’m not saying this to scare you. I say it because I want your treatment to work without having to do double the amount of treatments as someone who stick to these guidelines in the first place. I also believe when you know what supports your skin, you can lean into the process with more confidence (and fewer doubts). The good news? Laser hair removal, when done well, gets easier over time. The more consistent you are, the fewer treatments you’ll likely need. You’ll notice hair growing back slower, finer, sparser… until one day, you barely think about it at all.
