When a small mark on your skin becomes the first thing you notice
A skin tag that catches on your clothing. A raised lesion that makes shaving awkward. Or perhaps a mole or darker mark that draws your attention every time you look in the mirror. If you are considering skin lesion removal, the concern may be small, but its effect on your comfort or confidence can feel anything but small.
At Skin Perfection London, we assess unwanted moles, skin tags and other lesions before recommending the safest next step. Suitable benign lesions may respond to precise CryoPen treatment, while moles or uncertain lesions may require screening before cosmetic removal can be considered.
The goal is not simply to remove something you dislike. It is to understand what it is, determine whether treatment is appropriate and guide you towards the right solution for your skin.

“Skin lesion” is a broad term used to describe an area of skin that looks or feels different from the surrounding skin. It could be raised, flat, pigmented, rough, smooth, vascular or skin-coloured.
Many lesions are completely benign. Even so, different lesions develop for different reasons and require different approaches. A treatment that suits a small skin tag may not be appropriate for a pigmented mole or an uncertain mark.
This is why a proper assessment matters.
Moles
Moles are usually small, coloured growths formed by clusters of pigment-producing cells called melanocytes. They may be present from childhood or develop later, and they can be flat, raised, smooth or slightly textured.
Most moles are harmless. However, a mole should not be cosmetically treated simply because it looks unwanted.
A new or changing mole, or one that appears noticeably different from your other moles, requires appropriate medical or specialist assessment. This is particularly important if it changes in size, shape or colour, or begins itching, bleeding or crusting.
Suitable moles must be confirmed as benign before cosmetic removal is considered. Depending on the type, depth and location of the mole, CryoPen may not be the most appropriate removal method.
Skin tags
Skin tags are small, soft pieces of skin that may hang from a narrow stalk. They commonly appear around the neck, underarms, beneath the breasts, around the groin or in other areas where skin or clothing creates repeated friction.
They are usually harmless, but they can catch on jewellery, underwear or clothing. Some become irritated during shaving or exercise, while others simply make patients feel self-conscious.
Skin tags may become more common with age and can sometimes be associated with pregnancy, hormonal changes, weight gain or conditions linked to insulin resistance.
Suitable skin tags often respond well to CryoPen treatment.
Seborrhoeic keratoses
Seborrhoeic keratoses are common benign skin growths that often develop with age. They may look waxy, rough, raised or as though they have been placed on top of the skin.
Their colour can range from light beige to brown or almost black. Some people develop only one, while others develop several across the face or body.
They are not contagious and do not become skin cancer. However, because darker seborrhoeic keratoses can sometimes resemble other pigmented lesions, we may recommend further assessment if the diagnosis is not clear.
Suitable seborrhoeic keratoses may be treated with CryoPen.
Cherry angiomas
Cherry angiomas are small red or purple growths created by collections of tiny blood vessels. They often begin appearing during adulthood and may become more numerous with age.
They are usually harmless and may remain very small. However, raised angiomas can occasionally catch, become irritated or bleed if they are scratched.
Suitable cherry angiomas may respond to CryoPen, although the best treatment will depend on their size, location and appearance.
Warts and verrucae
Warts and verrucae are caused by strains of the human papillomavirus, or HPV. Unlike skin tags and most other benign lesions, they can spread through direct contact or contaminated surfaces.
Warts may appear on different parts of the body, while verrucae develop on the soles of the feet and can become uncomfortable when standing or walking.
Cryotherapy may be suitable for certain warts and verrucae, although repeat sessions are often required. Treatment suitability will depend on their location, size and depth.
Age spots and sun spots
Age spots, sometimes called sun spots or solar lentigines, are flat areas of increased pigmentation that commonly appear on skin exposed to the sun.
They often develop on the face, hands, shoulders and décolletage. Although many are benign, pigmented marks should be assessed carefully before treatment because not every brown mark is an age spot.
Depending on their appearance, suitable benign pigmentation may respond to CryoPen or another pigmentation treatment. If there is any uncertainty, screening or medical assessment should come first.
What causes moles, skin tags and benign lesions?
There is rarely one simple cause. Some lesions are influenced by genetics, while others become more common through ageing, sun exposure, friction, hormonal changes or viral infection.
Factors that may contribute include:
- Your genetics and family history
- Natural changes within the skin as you age
- Repeated friction between skin, clothing or jewellery
- Hormonal changes, including pregnancy
- Sun and ultraviolet exposure
- Viral infections responsible for warts and verrucae
- Individual skin characteristics
- Certain health or metabolic factors
Developing a benign lesion does not necessarily mean that anything is wrong with your health. Still, a diagnosis should never be assumed from appearance alone, particularly when a lesion is pigmented, changing or behaving differently.
When should a mole or skin lesion be checked?
Most marks and growths are harmless. The sensible approach is not to panic, but not to ignore meaningful changes either.
Seek medical advice if a mole or lesion:
- Is new or noticeably different from your other marks
- Changes in size, shape or colour
- Has an irregular shape or uneven border
- Contains several colours
- Begins bleeding, crusting or oozing
- Becomes persistently itchy, sore or painful
- Does not heal
- Grows rapidly
- Returns after previous removal
- Simply concerns you
We will not use CryoPen to treat a lesion that appears suspicious or cannot be confidently identified as benign.
If a mole or lesion requires investigation, our mole-screening service may provide an appropriate next step. Alternatively, we may advise you to speak to your GP or a dermatologist.
What can skin lesion removal help treat?
Following an appropriate assessment, skin lesion removal with CryoPen may be suitable for certain benign concerns, including:
- Skin tags
- Seborrhoeic keratoses
- Cherry angiomas
- Warts
- Verrucae
- Selected age spots or sun spots
- Other confirmed benign superficial lesions
Not every lesion on this list will automatically be suitable. Its type, size, depth, location, colour and your natural skin tone will all influence our recommendation.
Moles require particular care. We will not freeze an uncertain or suspicious mole, and CryoPen may not be the preferred removal method even when a mole has been confirmed as benign.
How does CryoPen skin lesion removal work?
CryoPen is a precision cryotherapy device that directs a controlled jet of nitrous oxide onto a suitable benign lesion.
The cold temperature freezes the targeted tissue. This damages the cells within the lesion while allowing the practitioner to limit unnecessary exposure to the surrounding skin.
Over the following days, the treated area may darken, blister or form a crust. The damaged tissue then gradually sheds as the skin heals underneath.
The treatment itself can be very quick, although the full appointment includes assessment, preparation and aftercare guidance. The duration of freezing depends on the type, size and depth of the lesion.
CryoPen may offer greater precision than less targeted freezing methods, but it still creates a controlled injury to the skin. Healing takes time, and no responsible practitioner should promise entirely risk-free or scar-free removal.

What results can you expect from skin lesion removal?
The aim of skin lesion removal is to reduce or remove a suitable benign lesion while limiting unnecessary damage to the surrounding skin.
After healing, the treated area may feel smoother and become less noticeable. You may also find that it no longer catches on clothing, jewellery or razors.
Some small superficial lesions respond after one treatment. Others, particularly thicker, deeper or more established lesions, may require additional sessions.
Results depend on:
- The type of lesion
- Its size and depth
- Its location
- The number of lesions being treated
- Your natural skin tone
- Your individual healing response
- How closely you follow the aftercare guidance
A successfully treated lesion may not return, but this cannot be guaranteed. New lesions can also develop elsewhere because treatment does not remove the underlying tendency to form them.
The right treatment begins with knowing what we are treating
It is tempting to think of lesion removal as a quick cosmetic procedure. Sometimes it is quick. The decision behind it, however, should never be rushed. Responsible skin lesion removal begins with identifying the concern and deciding whether cosmetic treatment is genuinely appropriate.
At your appointment, we will consider:
- What type of lesion it appears to be
- How long it has been present
- Whether it has changed
- Its size, colour, depth and location
- Whether it causes irritation or discomfort
- Your natural skin tone
- Your medical history
- Your history of pigmentation or scarring
- Whether CryoPen is a suitable treatment
- Whether screening or medical assessment is needed first
If we cannot confidently establish that the lesion is benign and suitable for cosmetic treatment, we will not treat it.
That may feel like an extra step when you simply want the lesion gone, but it is part of responsible care. The safest result begins with the right decision.

What if you are unsure whether the lesion is benign?
You are not expected to diagnose a mole or lesion yourself. In fact, photographs and online comparisons can sometimes create more confusion than reassurance.
Skin Perfection London offers a mole-screening service for patients who have noticed a mole or lesion they would like assessed. Images and information are reviewed through the appropriate specialist pathway, helping determine whether further medical attention is required.
Screening is different from cosmetic removal. It helps answer the safety question first. Once a lesion has been assessed and confirmed as benign, we can discuss whether cosmetic treatment at the clinic is appropriate.
Why choose Skin Perfection London for skin lesion removal?
A small lesion may look straightforward, but responsible treatment requires more than knowing how to operate a CryoPen.
