About stretch marks

Why do I have stretch marks?

Stretch marks are normally associated with pregnancy. But it’s possible for men as well as women to get them, as they occur anywhere on the body where the skin has been over-stretched.

Among other causes, stretch marks can be the result of weight gain or loss, significant body changes resulting from bodybuilding and periods of rapid growth that happen in puberty.

If you have lower levels of collagen in your skin you are more prone to stretch marks, as the skin is less elastic and less able to retain its shape. The scarring appears at first as red or purple lines, and may feel sensitive or itchy.

The areas most affected are the abdomen, upper arms, breasts, buttocks and thighs.

Although stretch marks may fade eventually to a white or silver colour, this can take several years.
