Our mole screening London service provides convenient access to a specialist opinion through Map My Mole. We capture detailed dermoscopic images of up to three individual moles or skin lesions and submit them securely for review by a UK consultant dermatologist.
You will receive a report explaining the dermatologist’s opinion and whether the lesion requires monitoring, an in-person medical assessment or further investigation.
This service does not provide a definitive cancer diagnosis or replace an examination by your GP or an in-person dermatologist. It does, however, give you clearer guidance on what to do next.

What does mole screening involve?
Skin Perfection London provides mole screening in partnership with Map My Mole, a digital mole review service.
During your appointment, a trained practitioner will:
- Discuss the mole or skin lesion that concerns you
- Collect relevant medical and lifestyle information
- Ask about changes you have noticed
- Capture a standard clinical photograph
- Take detailed images using a dermatoscope
- Securely submit the images and information to Map My Mole
- Arrange for a UK consultant dermatologist to review the submission
- Provide or discuss the resulting report and recommended next steps
The service currently allows us to submit up to three individual lesions for review during the appointment.
The consultant dermatologist does not examine you in person. Their opinion relies on the images and information supplied, so the report may recommend an in-person assessment when photographs alone cannot provide enough information.
What is a dermatoscope?
A dermatoscope is a specialist magnifying device that allows us to capture detailed images of structures beneath the surface of a mole or skin lesion.
These features are not always visible to the naked eye or through an ordinary photograph.
The dermoscopic images allow the reviewing consultant dermatologist to examine characteristics such as:
- Pigment patterns
- Colour distribution
- Borders and symmetry
- Blood vessel patterns
- Surface structures
- Other features relevant to the appearance of the lesion
Dermoscopy provides the dermatologist with more detail, but it does not replace biopsy or histological examination when these are medically necessary.
What will the dermatologist’s report tell you?
The report will include the consultant dermatologist’s opinion on the submitted mole or lesion and advice about what you should do next.
Depending on its appearance, the report may advise you to:
- Continue monitoring the lesion
- Photograph and review it again after a specified period
- Arrange an appointment with your GP
- Seek an in-person dermatology assessment
- Discuss further investigation
- Consider a biopsy or medical removal
- Explore cosmetic treatment if the lesion appears non-suspicious and suitable
A reassuring report relates only to the submitted images. It does not guarantee that a lesion can never change, and it does not assess moles or lesions elsewhere on your body.
You should continue monitoring your skin and seek medical advice if you notice any subsequent change.
How quickly will you receive your mole screening report?
Map My Mole reports are usually available within approximately 48 hours after we submit your images, although the reviewing process can occasionally take longer.
Once we receive the report, we will either send it to you or contact you to explain the recommended next step.
We will never interpret silence as reassurance. If the dermatologist recommends further assessment, we will explain this clearly so that you know who to contact and what to do next.

What mole screening can and cannot tell you
It is important to understand the distinction between a specialist image review and a definitive medical diagnosis.
The reviewing consultant dermatologist can assess the visible and dermoscopic features shown in your images and provide an expert opinion.
However, mole screening through photographs cannot:
- Confirm or rule out skin cancer with complete certainty
- Replace a biopsy or histology
- Assess areas that have not been photographed
- Provide a full-body skin examination
- Show how a lesion feels beneath the skin
- Replace urgent medical care
- Guarantee that a lesion will not change later
- Confirm that every non-suspicious lesion is suitable for cosmetic removal
A formal diagnosis of skin cancer may require an in-person medical examination, removal of a tissue sample and laboratory analysis.
If the report identifies uncertainty or potentially suspicious features, cosmetic treatment must not proceed. You will need an appropriate medical assessment.
When should you contact your GP rather than wait for mole screening?
Please contact your GP or another appropriate medical professional promptly if a mole or skin lesion:
- Changes rapidly
- Bleeds without an obvious cause
- Repeatedly crusts or fails to heal
- Becomes painful, inflamed or persistently itchy
- Develops a significant change in colour
- Becomes noticeably asymmetrical
- Develops an irregular border
- Looks very different from your other moles
- Causes you significant concern
Can Skin Perfection London remove the lesion afterwards?
A non-suspicious report does not automatically mean that we can or should remove the lesion cosmetically.
If the dermatologist’s report indicates that the lesion does not require further medical investigation, we can discuss whether it falls within the types of benign skin lesions we treat.
CryoPen treatment may be appropriate for certain confirmed benign lesions, such as selected skin tags, seborrhoeic keratoses or other superficial growths.
Some moles and skin lesions require a different removal method, an in-person doctor, surgical excision or histological examination. We will not treat a lesion when its identity remains uncertain or when medical investigation would provide a safer approach.
Screening and removal therefore remain separate decisions. The first establishes the appropriate next step. Only then can we consider whether cosmetic treatment at Skin Perfection London is suitable.
Why professional assessment matters before cosmetic lesion removal
Freezing, lasering or otherwise destroying an unidentified lesion can remove visible tissue without providing a sample for laboratory analysis.
That is why we do not rely solely on how a mark appears to the naked eye.
