How much hair falls out after the first laser treatment?

How much hair falls out after the first laser treatment? You finally booked your first laser hair removal session. You’re hopeful. Maybe even excited. But quietly, there’s that one question stuck in your head: “How much hair should fall out after this first treatment?” A lot? A little? None at all? If you’re googling this right after your appointment, or the week after, you’re on the right place because I will go through what to expect after your first laser hair removal.

What actually happens after that first laser session?

You’ve just walked out of a laser hair removal clinic in London, and your skin feels slightly warm, maybe a bit pink. Nothing major. You’re told to avoid heat, keep it clean, don’t exfoliate for a few days. And now you wait.

What most patients don’t realise at first, is that laser hair removal doesn’t instantly remove hair. That’s one of the biggest misconceptions we see in-clinic. Even after a detailed consultation, it takes time to reset our post waxing expectations to post laser reality.

What the laser actually does is target the pigment in actively growing hair (known as the anagen phase). The heat energy travels down the shaft and damages the hair follicle, weakening its ability to regrow.

The hair doesn’t fall out on the spot. Instead, it’s like the roots are cut off underground. And over the next 7–14 days, those hairs slowly work their way out of the follicle. You’ll notice them shedding, sometimes without even realising it. Like when you towel off after a shower or exfoliate gently.

How much hair falls out after the first laser treatment?

Well… it depends. If 100% of your hair was in the anagen phase at once, you’d see dramatic results straight away. But in reality,  only around 10–20% of hairs are in that treatable growth phase during a single session. So, only that portion will shed after your first treatment.

You’ll likely start noticing patchy areas that look smoother, while other areas still feel like normal. That’s perfectly normal. It doesn’t mean the treatment didn’t work. It means the laser did exactly what it was supposed to, with the hairs it could see.

This is why multiple sessions are essential. At Skin Perfection London, we usually recommend 6-8 sessions, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, depending on the area and your hair type. By treating every growth cycle over time, you’ll eventually target all the follicles effectively. Laser hair removal isn’t a magic eraser. It’s more like a smart, strategic approach to long-term freedom from shaving, waxing, and worrying.
