How often should I reapply SPF? Most dermatologists recommend reapplying SPF every two hours when exposed to daylight, and immediately after swimming, sweating, or towel drying. Even the best sunscreen cannot protect your skin all day from a single application. Let’s be honest. Most people know they should wear sunscreen. Far fewer people know how to use it properly. I see this all the time during consultations.
A patient tells me: “I wear SPF every day.” Which is fantastic. Then I ask: “How often do you reapply it?” And that’s usually when the room goes quiet. Because many people assume applying sunscreen once in the morning protects them until bedtime. Unfortunately, that isn’t how sunscreen works. In fact, improper SPF use is one of the biggest reasons people continue to experience: premature ageing, pigmentation, sun damage and uneven skin tone. Even when they believe they’re doing everything right.
How often should I reapply SPF?
The general recommendation is: Every two hours during daylight exposure. This doesn’t mean you need to set an alarm and apply sunscreen every two hours while sitting inside a dark room. Context matters.
However, if you are:
- outdoors
- walking around London
- sitting near large windows
- driving
- exercising outside
- on holiday
Then reapplication becomes extremely important. And if you’re swimming, sweating heavily, or wiping your face regularly, you may need to reapply even more frequently.
Why doesn’t SPF last all day?
This is one of the biggest misconceptions in skincare. Sunscreen doesn’t stop working after two hours. But its effectiveness gradually decreases. Throughout the day, SPF breaks down due to:
- UV exposure
- sweat
- natural skin oils
- touching your face
- friction from clothing
- environmental exposure
Even high-quality sunscreens become less reliable as the day progresses. That’s why reapplication matters. You’re not replacing sunscreen because it suddenly disappears. You’re restoring protection that has gradually diminished.
Why SPF is about more than preventing sunburn
Many people associate sunscreen with holidays. Or with avoiding a painful sunburn. But from a skin health perspective, SPF plays a much bigger role. Consistent sunscreen use helps reduce:
Premature Ageing
UV radiation is responsible for a significant percentage of visible skin ageing. Including: fine lines, wrinkles, loss of elasticity and uneven skin texture.
Pigmentation
If you’ve ever struggled with: melasma, sun spots, or post-acne pigmentation, then SPF is one of the most important products in your routine. Without proper protection, pigmentation treatments become significantly less effective.
Collagen Breakdown
Sun exposure accelerates collagen loss. And collagen is what helps keep skin firm, healthy, and youthful. Protecting collagen is often easier than trying to replace it later.
Why SPF matters even more after professional treatments
This is something I emphasise constantly in clinic. Treatments such as: laser hair removal, laser resurfacing, chemical peels, microneedling or exosome therapy. They can all leave the skin temporarily more vulnerable to UV damage. Freshly treated skin is trying to repair itself. The last thing we want is unnecessary sun exposure interfering with that process. This is why post-treatment SPF isn’t optional. It’s part of the treatment itself.
Do you need SPF indoors?
If you’re spending the entire day away from windows, reapplication is usually less important. However, if you work: beside large windows, in bright offices, driving regularly or you are near direct daylight then UV exposure still occurs. Particularly UVA rays, which penetrate glass and contribute significantly to skin ageing.
How much SPF should you apply?
Using too little sunscreen is almost as common as not reapplying it. Most adults need approximately:
two finger lengths for the face and neck or roughly: one teaspoon for the face, neck, and ears combined. Applying half the recommended amount dramatically reduces the level of protection you’re actually receiving.
Which SPF should you choose?
The best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually use consistently. Generally, I recommend:
- Must be a physical shield as opposed to a chemical sunscreen
- SPF 30 minimum
- SPF 50 for higher-risk individuals
- broad-spectrum protection
- formulas suited to your skin type
Oily skin, acne-prone skin, sensitive skin, and mature skin all have different requirements. This is why personalised recommendations often produce better results than simply buying whatever is trending online.
Common SPF mistakes
The most common mistakes I see include:
- applying SPF once and forgetting about it
- not applying enough
- skipping SPF on cloudy days
- forgetting the neck and ears
- assuming makeup SPF is enough
Unfortunately, these small mistakes add up over time. And often contribute to the very concerns patients are trying to correct later.
The bigger picture: SPF is one of the best anti-ageing products available
People often ask me: “What’s the best anti-ageing product?” They’re expecting an expensive serum. Or a miracle ingredient. But the answer is usually much simpler. SPF. Because preventing damage will always be easier than correcting damage.
Frequently asked questions
– Do I really need to reapply SPF every two hours?
If you’re outdoors or exposed to daylight for extended periods, yes. This helps maintain consistent protection.
– Do I need SPF on cloudy days?
Yes. UVA rays can penetrate clouds and still contribute to ageing and pigmentation.
– Is SPF 50 better than SPF 30?
Both offer excellent protection when applied correctly, but SPF 50 provides a slightly higher level of protection. When you compare it’s worth checking the ingredient list, some SPF 30 is lower in factor because it has a higher percentage of zinc oxide.
– Does makeup with SPF replace sunscreen?
Generally no. Most people do not apply enough makeup to achieve the advertised SPF protection.
