I completely understand why it sounds convincing. Imagine spending money to get rid of unwanted hair, only to feel like you’ve ended up with even more. In over 20 years of treating patients, I can honestly say that laser hair removal does not make hair grow back thicker. The good news is that experienced practitioners know how to reduce this risk by selecting suitable patients, using appropriate settings and avoiding treating hair that is unlikely to respond well.

Sometimes it isn’t new hair at all

One thing I’ve noticed is that many patients become much more aware of their hair once they start treatment.

Before laser, they might shave every day without really paying attention. Once treatment begins, every hair suddenly feels significant. Patients often tell me, “I’m checking every morning now.” And that’s completely understandable. But what they’re often seeing isn’t new growth. It’s hair that was already there, simply growing through its natural cycle.

Laser doesn’t remove every follicle in a single session because not every hair is actively growing at the same time. That’s why I keep saying patience matters.

Hormones can tell a different story

Laser can permanently destroy the follicles it successfully treats. What it can’t do is stop your body activating different follicles months or even years later. That’s why some patients, particularly those treating facial hair, benefit from occasional maintenance sessions.

Not every hair is suitable for laser

This is one of the hardest conversations to have because patients naturally want laser to work everywhere. Unfortunately, biology has other ideas. Laser works best on dark, coarse hair because it relies on melanin, the pigment inside the hair shaft.
