Why does my skin suddenly feel dry and sensitive in autumn? If your skin seems perfectly happy throughout summer and then suddenly becomes dry, tight, flaky or sensitive when autumn arrives, this article is definitely worth a read.
Cooler outdoor temperatures, lower humidity and the return of central heating can all increase moisture loss from the skin. Add hot showers, stronger skincare ingredients and the effects of summer UV exposure, and your skin barrier may struggle to keep up.
The result can be skin that feels tight after cleansing, makeup that suddenly sits badly, increased redness or products you’ve used for months unexpectedly beginning to sting. The solution isn’t necessarily to add ten new products. Often, autumn skin needs the opposite: less irritation, more hydration and better support for the skin barrier while it adjusts to its changing environment.
Why does my skin suddenly feel dry and sensitive in autumn?
Your outermost skin layer has an important job. It helps retain water while protecting you from external irritants.
When that barrier isn’t functioning optimally, transepidermal water loss can increase. In simple terms, your skin struggles to hold onto the water it needs.
That’s when you can experience tightness, rough texture, flaking, redness and increased sensitivity.
Is my skin dry or dehydrated?
These words get used interchangeably, but they’re not quite the same. Dry skin lacks oil. Dehydrated skin lacks water.
You can therefore have oily, blemish-prone skin that is simultaneously dehydrated. I’ve seen patients respond to that tight feeling by applying stronger exfoliating products because they assume the roughness means dead skin needs removing.
Sometimes that makes the problem worse.
Should I stop using retinol and acids?
Not everybody needs to stop their active skincare in autumn. But if your skin is persistently burning, peeling, stinging or becoming increasingly reactive, I wouldn’t encourage you to “push through.”
Look at the whole routine. Retinoid. Glycolic acid. Salicylic acid. Vitamin C. Scrub. Another exfoliating toner.
Individually, some may be perfectly appropriate. Together? Your skin may be quietly begging for a day off.
Which professional treatments can help autumn skin?
That depends on what we see during consultation. Hydrating facial treatments such as Hydro2Facial may help replenish and refresh dull, dehydrated skin, while LED can be incorporated into certain treatment plans to support skin recovery.
Gentle professional peels may also be appropriate for some patients as we move into the lower-UV months. But first, we repair. Then we get ambitious.
Ayse’s Advice
Every autumn, patients tell me their skincare has suddenly stopped working. Sometimes nothing is wrong with the product. The environment around the skin has changed.
My advice is to resist the temptation to panic-buy an entirely new routine. Simplify. Hydrate. Protect your barrier. Keep wearing SPF, because October doesn’t switch UV off.
Then introduce active treatment according to what your skin actually needs.
