Can exosomes regrow hair in completely bald areas?

Can exosomes regrow hair in completely bald areas? If you’ve seen dramatic claims about exosome hair restoration online, you may understandably wonder whether exosomes can regrow hair in an area that is already completely bald.

Here’s the answer I think every patient deserves before spending money: Exosomes cannot reliably recreate hair follicles that are no longer viable.

Exosome-based hair restoration is an exciting developing area, and early research has reported encouraging improvements in measures such as hair density and thickness in some patients. But the evidence is still evolving, treatment protocols aren’t universally standardised, and exosomes should not be presented as a miracle cure for advanced baldness.

Where I’m much more interested is in thinning areas where follicles and miniaturised hairs are still present. There, we potentially have something to support.

What exactly are exosomes?

Exosomes are microscopic extracellular vesicles involved in communication between cells.

They carry signalling molecules such as proteins and other biological material between cells, which is why researchers are interested in their potential role in tissue repair and hair follicle activity.

In hair restoration, the aim is to support an environment that may encourage healthier follicle function.

Who may be more suitable for exosome hair restoration?

We tend to be looking much more in areas where hair is:

  • becoming progressively thinner
  • losing density
  • becoming miniaturised
  • still present but noticeably weaker

These signs suggest there may still be follicles worth supporting. Suitability depends on the underlying cause of hair loss too.

Can exosomes regrow hair in completely bald areas?

A long-standing smooth bald area may indicate advanced follicular loss. No responsible practitioner should promise that exosomes will magically regenerate an entirely new head of hair in that situation.

Other options, including medical assessment or surgical hair transplantation, may be more appropriate depending on the individual. Sometimes telling a patient not to spend money on a treatment is part of treating them properly.

Why do we combine exosomes with Dermapen microneedling?

At Skin Perfection London, our hair restoration approach may incorporate Dermapen medical microneedling with exosome-based treatment where appropriate.

Controlled microneedling creates microchannels in the scalp and stimulates a wound-healing response. The treatment plan is designed to support the scalp environment and remaining follicles.

But importantly, having exosomes available doesn’t mean every person with hair loss should receive them. We first need to understand the likely cause of your thinning.

Ayse’s Advice

Exosomes are exciting, but I don’t like the word “miracle” anywhere near hair restoration. Hair loss is emotional. That makes people vulnerable to enormous promises.

What I want to know is whether we have follicles with realistic potential to respond, what may be driving the thinning and whether this is actually the right treatment for you. That’s a much more useful conversation.
