Cosmelan Treatment in London
When pigmentation starts affecting how you feel about your skin
Cosmelan treatment can offer a more structured way forward when pigmentation keeps returning, no matter how carefully you look after your skin. Perhaps you have learned exactly where to place your concealer, avoid leaving the house without foundation or become conscious of certain lighting because it makes the darker patches appear more noticeable.
It can feel frustrating. Sometimes deeply so.
Our Cosmelan treatment in London provides a structured professional programme for melasma, sun damage, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and stubborn uneven skin tone.
Rather than focusing only on the pigmentation you can see today, Cosmelan works to reduce its appearance while helping to regulate the processes responsible for excess melanin production.
This is not a quick facial or a one-off peel. It is a professionally supervised six-month programme that combines an intensive clinic treatment with personalised home care and regular skin reviews.
For the right patient, Cosmelan can help the complexion look clearer, brighter and more even, allowing you to feel more confident in your natural skin and perhaps a little less dependent on the makeup you once used to hide it.

Cosmelan is a professional depigmentation programme developed by Mesoestetic.
The treatment combines a professional Cosmelan 1 mask, applied in the clinic, with an essential six-month home-care programme.
Cosmelan targets the production and transfer of melanin, the natural pigment responsible for the colour of your skin. When melanin production becomes uneven or overactive, darker patches can develop across the face.
The programme aims to reduce the appearance of existing pigmentation while helping to manage the activity that contributes to new or recurring patches.
People sometimes refer to Cosmelan as a “Cosmelan peel”. Although peeling can occur, particularly during the early recovery stage, Cosmelan is more accurately described as a complete pigmentation-management programme.
The mask starts the process. Your home care and continued sun protection help guide and maintain it.

What can Cosmelan treatment help improve?
Cosmelan treatment may help improve the appearance of:
- Melasma
- Hormonal pigmentation
- Sun-related pigmentation
- Sun spots
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
- Dark marks left after acne or blemishes
- Stubborn patches of facial pigmentation
- Uneven skin tone
- Selected superficial pigmentation
- Dullness associated with uneven skin tone
The treatment may also help the skin appear brighter, smoother and more luminous as visible discolouration gradually improves.
However, Cosmelan is primarily a pigmentation treatment. It is not intended to replace a wrinkle treatment, surgical procedure or skin-tightening treatment.
Not every brown mark is suitable for cosmetic pigmentation treatment. Moles and new, changing or unexplained lesions may require medical assessment before we consider treating the surrounding skin.
Why does facial pigmentation develop?
Pigmentation develops when the skin produces or distributes melanin unevenly.
Several factors can influence this process, including:
- Sun and daylight exposure
- Hormonal changes
- Pregnancy
- Genetics
- Inflammation
- Acne and blemishes
- Skin injuries
- Certain medications
- Previous irritation or unsuitable treatments
Melasma can be particularly difficult to manage because hormones, genetics and light exposure may continue influencing pigment production after the visible patches have improved.
This explains why pigmentation sometimes returns after a peel, facial or brightening product initially appears to work.
The surface pigment may have faded, but the underlying tendency to produce excess pigment remains.
Cosmelan takes a more comprehensive approach. It aims to improve the pigmentation you can see while supporting longer-term pigment regulation through consistent home care.
Can Cosmelan permanently cure melasma?
Cosmelan can significantly improve the appearance of melasma, but no responsible practitioner should promise a permanent cure.
Melasma often behaves like a long-term condition. It may fade during certain periods and become more visible again after sun exposure, hormonal changes or other triggers.
The aim of your Cosmelan treatment is to:
- Reduce the appearance of existing pigmentation
- Help regulate excess pigment production
- Improve the overall uniformity of your complexion
- Support longer-term pigmentation management
- Give you the knowledge and home-care routine needed to protect your progress
Maintenance matters.
Even after completing the programme, you will need to continue protecting your skin from sunlight and follow the skincare guidance provided by your practitioner.
Is Cosmelan suitable for different skin tones?
Cosmelan can be considered for Fitzpatrick skin types I to VI, including patients with deeper skin tones who may be more susceptible to post-inflammatory pigmentation.
This does not mean that every patient should receive exactly the same treatment or home-care schedule.
Your natural skin tone, sensitivity, skin-barrier health, type of pigmentation and previous treatment history all affect the way we plan your programme.
This individual assessment is particularly important for skin that develops darker marks easily after irritation. Excessive inflammation can sometimes make pigmentation more noticeable, which is why professional supervision matters.
Suitable for many skin tones does not mean suitable for every person. We will always assess your skin before recommending treatment.
How does Cosmelan treatment work?
Cosmelan is not simply one appointment. It is a structured journey involving professional treatment, home care and continued support.

Step one: your consultation and Skin Observ assessment
Your journey begins with a detailed skin consultation and Skin Observ analysis.
We will examine your pigmentation, discuss when it appeared and explore factors that may influence it, including sun exposure, hormonal changes, inflammation, medication and previous treatments.
We will also review your:
- Medical history
- Current skincare routine
- Previous skin treatments
- Skin sensitivity
- Treatment expectations
- Ability to commit to the home-care programme
Photographs may be taken during your assessment so that we can monitor changes throughout the six-month programme.
If we identify a new, changing or unexplained pigmented lesion, we may recommend an appropriate medical assessment before proceeding.
Step two: your professional Cosmelan mask
On your treatment day, your practitioner will prepare your skin and apply the professional Cosmelan 1 mask in the clinic.
You will leave the clinic wearing the mask and remove it yourself at home after your prescribed treatment time.
Skin Perfection patients will usually wear the mask for between six and eight hours, depending on their skin assessment and personal treatment plan.
The mask is visible and has an opaque appearance, so you may wish to arrange a private journey home.
While wearing the mask, you will need to:
- Keep it in place for the full prescribed time
- Lightly mist it with plain water occasionally to prevent drying or cracking
- Avoid touching, scratching, rubbing or picking at it
- Avoid exercise and excessive sweating
- Avoid hot showers, saunas and steam rooms
- Remain out of direct sunlight
- Avoid applying makeup or skincare over it
- Keep the product away from your eyes and lips
Do not remove the mask early or leave it on longer than instructed.
More exposure does not mean a better result. It may simply increase irritation.
Step three: removing your mask at home
Once you reach your prescribed removal time:
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Use plenty of cool to lukewarm water.
- Gently soften the mask.
- Remove it using your hands or a clean, very soft damp flannel.
- Wipe gently rather than rubbing or scrubbing.
- Continue rinsing until you have completely removed the mask.
- Pat your skin dry with a clean, soft towel.
Your skin may look red and feel warm, tight or sensitive following removal. Dryness, discomfort and peeling can also develop during the following days.
Apply melan recovery to soothe and comfort your skin.
If it is daytime, follow this with melan 130 pigment control SPF 50+.
Do not apply Cosmelan 2 immediately after removing the mask. At Skin Perfection, you will normally begin Cosmelan 2 seven days after your clinic treatment, following your practitioner’s guidance.
Step four: your first seven days
The first week gives your skin time to recover from the professional mask.
You may experience:
- Redness and warmth
- Tightness
- Sensitivity
- Dryness and flaking
- Visible peeling
- Peeling around the mouth, chin and nose
- Temporary changes in the appearance of your pigmentation
Some patients experience noticeable peeling. Others notice more redness, dryness or sensitivity.
During this initial recovery period, keep your skincare routine simple.
Morning routine:
- Cleanse gently with an approved mild cleanser and lukewarm water.
- Apply melan recovery.
- Apply melan 130 pigment control SPF 50+ generously.
- Reapply sun protection regularly, particularly when outdoors.
Evening routine:
- Cleanse the skin gently.
- Apply melan recovery.
- Reapply the calming balm as needed for dryness and comfort.
Do not pull, pick or exfoliate peeling skin.
Avoid retinol, exfoliating acids, scrubs and other active products unless your practitioner specifically approves them.
Step five: beginning Cosmelan 2
Seven days after your professional treatment, and once your practitioner has reviewed your skin, you will normally begin Cosmelan 2.
Your initial prescribed routine will usually include:
Morning:
- Gentle cleanser
- A pea-sized amount of Cosmelan 2
- Melan recovery
- Melan 130 pigment control SPF 50+
Evening:
- Gentle cleanser
- A pea-sized amount of Cosmelan 2
- Melan recovery
Your practitioner may adjust the frequency according to your skin’s response and tolerance.
Never apply more product or increase the frequency in an attempt to achieve faster results. Excessive use can cause unnecessary inflammation, compromise your skin barrier and potentially make pigmentation more difficult to manage.
Step six: pigmentation regulation and maintenance
As your skin progresses through the programme, your practitioner may change the frequency of Cosmelan 2.
During the later stages, you may reduce its use to evenings only.
Your routine may then include:
Morning:
- Gentle cleanser
- Melan recovery when required
- Melan 130 pigment control SPF 50+
Evening:
- Gentle cleanser
- Cosmelan 2
- Melan recovery
Continue your prescribed routine until your practitioner advises you to change or complete it.
The full programme lasts approximately six months.
Why is the Cosmelan home-care programme so important?
The professional mask begins the process, but it cannot do all the work alone.
Cosmelan 2 helps continue the depigmenting process and regulate the activity that contributes to recurring dark patches.
Stopping your products as soon as the skin looks clearer may limit your final result and allow pigmentation to become more noticeable again.
Consistency is essential, but so is restraint.
Using more Cosmelan 2 than prescribed will not clear pigmentation twice as quickly. It may simply irritate your skin.
Follow the amount and frequency recommended by your practitioner, even if advice online suggests something different. Your skin has its own history, tolerance and triggers.
Will my products last for the full six months?
Your initial products may not last throughout the complete six-month programme.
One Cosmelan 2 container lasts approximately six weeks, depending on the amount and frequency prescribed. We recommend monitoring your supply and arranging your replacement before you run out.
Cosmelan 2 plays an essential role in your continued pigmentation programme. Interrupting your routine because you have run out of product may affect your progress.
Replacement products may include:
- Cosmelan 2
- Melan recovery
- Melan 130 pigment control SPF 50+
Replacement products are charged separately unless they form part of your agreed treatment package.
Your practitioner will review your remaining products during your appointments and advise you when to replenish them.
What results can I expect from Cosmelan treatment?
Some patients begin to notice brighter, more even-looking skin within the first few weeks.
Further improvement develops gradually over the following months as visible pigmentation softens and the home-care programme continues regulating pigment activity.
The speed and degree of improvement depend on:
- The type of pigmentation
- The depth of pigmentation
- How long it has been present
- Hormonal influences
- Your natural skin response
- Previous irritation or treatments
- Sun and daylight exposure
- Consistency with home care
- Daily sun protection
Results will vary.
Some patients achieve a substantial visible improvement, while deeper or hormonally influenced pigmentation may remain partially visible.
Melasma rarely follows a perfectly straight path. Your skin may look calmer on some days and more reactive on others, particularly during the early stages.
Our aim is to give you realistic guidance, support your skin carefully and help you achieve the best improvement your individual pigmentation allows.
What does the skin look like after Cosmelan?
Following the professional mask, you may experience:
- Redness
- Warmth
- Tightness
- Sensitivity
- Dryness
- Flaking
- Peeling
- Temporary itching or discomfort
Your skin may not look polished or “finished” immediately after treatment. In fact, the early recovery stage can be quite visible.
Many patients continue their normal activities, but others prefer to schedule a few quieter days while the redness and peeling settle.
If you have an important event, holiday or professional commitment, tell us before booking so that we can help you plan your treatment sensibly.
What should I avoid during Cosmelan treatment?
During your programme, avoid:
- Direct sun exposure
- Sunbeds
- Picking or manually removing peeling skin
- Scrubs and exfoliating tools
- Retinol and exfoliating acids unless approved
- Unapproved active skincare
- Waxing and irritating facial hair-removal methods
- Excessive heat during early recovery
- Saunas and steam rooms
- Swimming during early recovery
- Exercise that causes heavy sweating during early recovery
- Unapproved facials and skin treatments
You should avoid chemical peels, microneedling, laser hair removal and other treatments that intentionally disrupt the skin for the first six months unless your Skin Perfection practitioner specifically clears them.
Daily sun protection remains essential during the full programme and afterwards.
Why is sun protection essential?
Sun and daylight exposure can stimulate pigment production and make melasma or hyperpigmentation more noticeable.
Without consistent protection, your skin may continue producing excess melanin despite the work taking place through your Cosmelan programme.
You will need to apply melan 130 pigment control SPF 50+ generously every morning and reapply it as instructed.
Hats, shade and sensible sun avoidance provide additional protection.
Cosmelan can take place at different times of year, but autumn and winter are often more practical because avoiding intense and prolonged sun exposure becomes easier.
Sun protection is not simply something you use while the skin peels. It forms part of your long-term pigmentation-management plan.

Sometimes it will. Sometimes your skin may need preparation, a different treatment or medical assessment first.
