Rosacea and Redness

When your skin seems to react before you have had a chance to

Living with rosacea and redness can feel unpredictable. It may begin with a flush that lingers longer than it used to. Your cheeks feel warm during a meeting, after a glass of wine or simply when you move between cold streets and a heated room.

Then perhaps the redness becomes harder to predict. Products that once felt comfortable suddenly sting. Small vessels appear around your nose or cheeks. You find yourself reaching for more makeup, avoiding photographs or wondering whether everyone else can see how hot and uncomfortable your skin feels.

Rosacea and facial redness can affect far more than the appearance of your complexion. When your skin feels unpredictable, it can influence how relaxed and confident you feel in everyday situations.

At Skin Perfection London, we help you understand what may be contributing to your redness and create a personalised plan focused on calmer, more comfortable and more even-looking skin.

What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a long-term skin condition that primarily affects the face. It commonly appears across the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead, although symptoms can sometimes extend to the neck or chest.

The condition may cause:

  • Frequent flushing or blushing
  • Persistent facial redness
  • Visible thread veins
  • Burning, warmth or stinging
  • Dry or sensitive skin
  • Red bumps and pus-filled spots
  • Swelling
  • Irritated or watery eyes
  • Thickening of the skin in more advanced cases

Rosacea is not contagious, and it is not caused by poor hygiene.

Symptoms often fluctuate. Your skin may feel relatively settled for weeks before a trigger causes another flare. For some patients, redness remains the main concern. Others experience visible vessels, sensitivity or acne-like breakouts alongside it.

Rosacea can affect every skin tone, although visible redness may be less obvious in brown or Black skin. Warmth, sensitivity, swelling, colour changes or persistent irritation may be more noticeable than bright redness.

Rosacea does not look or feel the same for everyone

Rosacea was traditionally divided into four subtypes. In practice, symptoms often overlap, which is why we focus on what your skin is actually experiencing rather than trying to fit every patient into one rigid category.

Persistent redness and flushing

Your face may flush easily in response to heat, emotion, exercise, food, alcohol or changes in temperature.

Over time, temporary flushing can develop into more persistent redness. Small blood vessels may also become visible around the cheeks, nose or chin.

This pattern is sometimes described as erythematotelangiectatic rosacea.

Rosacea with spots and bumps

Some patients develop red bumps or pus-filled spots alongside facial redness.

This can resemble acne, but rosacea does not usually cause the same blackheads and blocked pores associated with acne. The skin may also feel hot, sore or unusually sensitive.

This pattern is sometimes called papulopustular rosacea.

Thickened or uneven skin

In less common and more advanced cases, rosacea can cause areas of skin to gradually thicken.

This most frequently affects the nose and is known as rhinophyma. It is more common in men and requires medical or dermatological assessment.

Cosmetic light-based treatment at Skin Perfection London is not a substitute for appropriate medical care for thickened skin.

Rosacea affecting the eyes

Ocular rosacea affects the eyes and eyelids. Symptoms may include dryness, watering, soreness, crusting around the eyelashes or a gritty sensation.

Eye symptoms should not be treated as a cosmetic skin concern.

Seek urgent medical advice if you experience eye pain, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, a red eye or a persistent gritty sensation, as these symptoms may require prompt treatment.

What causes rosacea and facial redness?

The exact cause of rosacea is not fully understood. Genetics, the immune system, blood-vessel sensitivity and environmental factors may all play a part.

What we do know is that rosacea-prone skin often reacts more strongly to internal and external changes. Blood vessels can dilate, inflammation may increase and the skin barrier may become more vulnerable.

Facial redness can also have causes other than rosacea, including:

  • Sensitive or reactive skin
  • Contact dermatitis
  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis
  • Acne and post-inflammatory redness
  • Sun damage
  • Visible thread veins
  • Overuse of strong skincare
  • Menopausal or hormonal flushing
  • Medication or medical conditions

Not every red face is rosacea. Understanding the pattern, symptoms and possible triggers helps us decide whether cosmetic treatment is appropriate or whether you should speak to your GP or dermatologist.

What can trigger a rosacea flare?

Triggers vary considerably between patients. Something that causes an immediate flare for one person may have no effect on another.

Common triggers can include:

  • Sunlight and ultraviolet exposure
  • Hot weather or heated rooms
  • Cold temperatures and wind
  • Sudden temperature changes
  • Hot baths, saunas and steam rooms
  • Alcohol
  • Spicy food
  • Hot drinks
  • Strenuous exercise
  • Stress and strong emotions
  • Harsh or unsuitable skincare
  • Fragranced products
  • Over-exfoliation
  • Certain medication
  • Hormonal changes

You do not necessarily need to avoid everything on this list. In fact, trying to eliminate every possible trigger can make normal life feel rather joyless.

A more useful approach is to notice patterns. Keeping a simple record of your symptoms, skincare, food, environment and lifestyle can help identify the triggers that genuinely matter to your skin.

NHS guidance also recommends daily sun protection, gentle skincare and avoiding known personal triggers where practical.

When rosacea and redness start affecting more than your complexion

People sometimes dismiss rosacea as “just redness”. That description rarely captures what living with reactive skin actually feels like.

You may plan your makeup around whether your skin might flare. Avoid a favourite meal before an event. Feel self-conscious when someone asks why your face is red. Or become nervous about trying anything new because so many products have already made your skin feel worse.

The aim of managing rosacea is not to create flawless, expressionless skin.

It is to help you feel more comfortable and less controlled by unpredictable redness. To make your complexion feel manageable again, perhaps even something you can stop thinking about quite so often.

Why a professional assessment matters

Rosacea can resemble acne, dermatitis, sun damage and several other skin concerns. Different signs may also require different forms of treatment.

During your consultation, we will consider:

  • Whether your redness appears temporary or persistent
  • The location and pattern of your symptoms
  • Visible vessels or broken capillaries
  • Bumps, spots, dryness or sensitivity
  • Burning, stinging or warmth
  • Your known or suspected triggers
  • Your current skincare routine
  • Previous treatments and reactions
  • Medication and relevant medical history
  • Your natural skin tone
  • Whether treatment is likely to be safe and worthwhile

If your symptoms suggest that you need medical diagnosis or prescription treatment, we will explain this clearly.

Cosmetic treatments can help manage suitable visible symptoms, but they cannot replace a GP or dermatologist where medical care is required.

How we approach rosacea and redness at Skin Perfection London

Rosacea treatment should begin with the symptoms affecting you, not with a predetermined procedure.

For one patient, the priority may be persistent diffuse redness. For another, it may be individual broken capillaries, uncomfortable sensitivity or repeated flare-ups caused by a weakened skin barrier.

Following your assessment, your personalised plan may include one or more of the following.

Palomar Icon IPL PhotoFacial treatment

Palomar Icon IPL may help reduce suitable diffuse redness and superficial visible vessels.

Controlled pulses of light target colour within the vessels. The body then gradually processes the treated vessels, helping redness appear less noticeable and the complexion more even.

IPL does not cure rosacea or prevent future flare-ups. It is also not suitable for every skin tone, recently tanned skin or every form of facial redness.

A consultation and patch test are required before treatment.

Treatment for individual facial veins

When isolated thread veins or broken capillaries are the main concern, a more targeted vascular treatment approach may be appropriate.

Treatment aims to reduce suitable superficial vessels around areas such as the nose and cheeks.

The colour, depth, size and location of the vessel, together with your skin tone, will determine whether treatment is suitable.

Dermalux LED phototherapy

Dermalux LED phototherapy may be used to support sensitive, inflamed or compromised skin.

The treatment is non-invasive and does not use heat in the same way as IPL. It may be included as part of a wider plan to support skin comfort and recovery.

LED cannot diagnose or cure rosacea, but some patients find it a useful part of an ongoing skin-management programme.

Professional skincare for rosacea-prone skin

Rosacea-prone skin often needs consistency more than complexity.

We may recommend a simple home routine focused on gentle cleansing, barrier support, hydration and daily broad-spectrum sun protection.

Products will be selected according to your individual skin rather than because they carry a “sensitive skin” label. Even products marketed as gentle can contain ingredients that do not suit every patient.

Carefully selected skin treatments

Certain gentle professional treatments may support texture, hydration or skin-barrier health when rosacea is stable.

However, strong peels, aggressive exfoliation, heat-based procedures and stimulating treatments can worsen sensitive or actively inflamed skin.

We will not recommend a treatment simply because it appears on a standard rosacea menu. Your skin’s current condition must guide the decision.

What results can you expect from rosacea treatment?

With an appropriate treatment and home-care plan, your skin may appear:

  • Calmer and more even
  • Less affected by persistent facial redness
  • Clearer around visible superficial vessels
  • Less reactive to everyday triggers
  • More comfortable and better hydrated
  • Easier to manage with skincare and makeup

Results depend on the symptoms being treated.

IPL may help reduce suitable visible redness and superficial vessels. LED and appropriate skincare may support comfort and skin-barrier health. Patients with bumps, pustules or significant inflammation may also require treatment prescribed by a GP or dermatologist.

Rosacea is a long-term, relapsing condition. Symptoms can improve considerably, but permanent clearance cannot be promised.

Your plan may therefore include an initial course followed by maintenance treatment, daily sun protection and ongoing trigger management.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is rosacea the same as facial redness?

No. Facial redness is a symptom that can have several possible causes.

Rosacea commonly causes flushing, persistent redness and visible vessels, but similar changes can occur because of sensitivity, dermatitis, sun damage, hormones, medication or other conditions.

If your redness is persistent, uncomfortable or changing, seek appropriate professional or medical advice rather than assuming it is rosacea.

Can rosacea be cured?

There is currently no permanent cure for rosacea.

However, its symptoms can often be managed through appropriate medical care, cosmetic treatment, gentle skincare, sun protection and identifying personal triggers.

Your skin may experience calmer periods and more active flare-ups. The aim is to reduce the frequency or visibility of symptoms and make the condition easier to live with.

Does rosacea get worse over time?

Rosacea does not follow exactly the same course in every patient.

For some people, symptoms remain mild and occasional. For others, temporary flushing may gradually develop into more persistent redness, visible vessels or inflammatory bumps.

Early professional or medical advice may help you understand the condition and manage aggravating factors before symptoms become more difficult to control.

Is rosacea caused by poor skincare or hygiene?

No. Rosacea is not caused by poor hygiene, and it is not contagious.

However, unsuitable skincare can aggravate symptoms. Strong acids, scrubs, fragrance, excessive cleansing and frequent changes to your routine may disrupt an already sensitive skin barrier.

A simple, consistent routine is often more helpful than repeatedly trying new “miracle” products.

Can IPL help rosacea and facial redness?

Palomar Icon IPL may help reduce suitable diffuse redness and superficial visible vessels associated with rosacea.

The treatment directs controlled light energy towards colour within the vessels. Over time, treated vessels may become less noticeable.

IPL cannot cure rosacea or prevent future flare-ups. Suitability depends on your symptoms, skin tone, medical history and recent sun exposure.

Is rosacea treatment suitable for every skin tone?

Rosacea can occur in every skin tone, but not every cosmetic treatment suits every skin tone.

IPL requires particular caution because the light energy can also interact with pigment in the skin. This increases the risk of burns or pigmentation changes in unsuitable candidates or recently tanned skin.

If IPL is not appropriate, we will discuss safer supportive options or advise you to seek medical care where necessary.

How many rosacea treatments will I need?

The answer depends on your symptoms and the treatment recommended.

IPL is generally carried out as a course rather than a single session. LED may also be recommended as a course or used alongside other procedures.

Your practitioner will monitor how your skin responds and adjust the plan where necessary. More treatment is not always better, particularly when the skin is reactive.

How quickly will I see an improvement?

Some patients notice that their skin looks calmer after an early treatment, while vascular changes usually develop more gradually.

Following IPL, treated redness or vessels may initially appear darker or more noticeable before they fade over the following weeks.

Rosacea management is rarely an overnight transformation. Sustainable improvement usually comes from combining appropriate treatment with consistent home care and trigger awareness.

Will treatment stop my rosacea from returning?

No cosmetic treatment can guarantee that rosacea symptoms will never return.

Treatment may reduce existing visible symptoms, but your underlying tendency towards flushing and inflammation remains. Sun exposure, stress, temperature changes, food, alcohol and other personal triggers may cause future flare-ups.

Maintenance treatment may be recommended depending on your response.

Can I have treatment during an active flare-up?

That depends on the severity and nature of the flare.

Very inflamed, irritated or compromised skin may need time to settle before cosmetic treatment. In some cases, medical treatment may be more appropriate.

Contact the clinic before attending if your skin has changed significantly since your consultation or patch test.

What skincare should I use for rosacea?

Rosacea-prone skin generally benefits from a gentle cleanser, suitable moisturiser and daily broad-spectrum sunscreen.

The rest depends on your individual skin. Some patients tolerate selected active ingredients well, while others experience stinging and irritation.

Introduce new products carefully and avoid building an unnecessarily complicated routine. We can recommend suitable professional skincare after assessing your skin.

Should I exfoliate rosacea-prone skin?

Aggressive exfoliation can worsen redness, sensitivity and barrier disruption.

That does not mean every patient with rosacea must avoid all exfoliating ingredients forever. Suitability depends on how active your symptoms are, what product is being used and how frequently it is applied.

Avoid scrubbing or trying to remove redness through stronger exfoliation. Redness is not a layer of dead skin that needs to be polished away.

Can stress cause rosacea?

Stress does not necessarily cause rosacea, but it can trigger or worsen flushing in some patients.

Stress-management strategies may help reduce one source of flare-ups, although they should not be presented as a replacement for appropriate treatment.

Most importantly, having rosacea does not mean you have failed to manage stress properly. It is a genuine skin condition, not a personal failing.

Can rosacea affect the eyes?

Yes. Ocular rosacea may cause dry, watery, irritated or gritty eyes, swollen eyelids or crusting around the eyelashes.

Speak to a GP or appropriate eye-care professional if you develop eye symptoms.

Seek urgent medical help if you experience eye pain, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, a red eye or significant grittiness. NHS guidance warns that these may indicate keratitis, which can be serious without timely treatment.

… I’m delighted with the results of my recent LVL (“lash volume lift”) treatment. Lilly added volume and dimension to my stick straight, long blonde lashes. The curl and blue/black tint really made them pop! I feel so pretty and awake now without makeup, and with mascara, the extra drama is intense in the best way. So happy I found a way to enhance my lashe without those high-maintenance and damaging extensions.

… I have had a course of skin treatments: photofacial rejuvenation combined with a peel and my skin feels so much better for it. It can be uncomfortable during treatment but definitely worth the results.
