For anyone who has ever suffered with acne and won that battle, the effects of the condition can be imprinted on to the skin in the form of acne scarring and can be a life-long reminder of the condition. I see many patients who have got over the embarrassment and upset of acne, only to be faced with new skin challenges and who are seeking help to rid their skin of these unsightly reminders.
Acne scarring is most common in those who have suffered with long-term acne from teenage years onwards. It’s usually often the result of inflamed lesions when the acne is active, such as pustules, papules or cysts. Inflamed blemishes occur when the pore or follicle becomes engorged with excess oil, dead skin cell and bacteria. In response to this, the skin produces new and uneven collagen fibres to repair the damage to the dermis. Acne scars can appear as small pits or bumps on the skin and will remain for years after the acne has subsided.
So, what can be done about acne scarring?
At Skin Perfection in the heart of London, we are a team of skin experts, dedicated to give our patients the skin that they always wanted and to combat acne scarring once and for all. We have painstakingly researched and found a variety of effective, non-surgical solutions for acne scarring that can produce some beautiful results.
- Medical microneedling – a gentle and non-ablative way to reduce the appearance of acne scarring. Medical microneedling works by putting tiny punctures into the skin using very small pins in a hand-held device. This encourages natural collagen production within the dermis and therefore, helps healing. Medical microneedling also creates micro-channels into the skin which allows for helpful topical agents such as serums and vitamins to be absorbed more deeply and thus more effective. Medical Microneedling helps to restore a smoother skin appearance with very little or no downtime or side-effects.
- Dermal peels and resurfacers – a superb way to resurface, revitalise and smooth acne scarring. A series of naturally derived fruit or sugar derived acids are applied to the skin, in varying strengths to slough away dead skin cells, encourage new cell turnover and to smooth the skin’s surface. After a treatment, your skin may go through a period of light to moderate ‘peeling’ or ‘shedding’ which is normal. We can select certain strengths depending on the amount of downtime you wish to experience. A course of dermal peels can reduce the appearance of acne scarring and give the skin an even tone and more youthful appearance.
- Skinade – a collagen skin supplement drink which can help to heal the skin from the inside. Skinade is a marine collagen based drink which comes in handy sachets or ‘ready-mixed’ bottles. Skinade helps the body produce more collagen, the substance responsible for healthy and youthful looking skin. We have seen some amazing results in those who experience acne scarring when taken regularly.
- Laser photo-facial skin rejuvenation – a light energy treatment which improves the tone and texture of the skin and can dramatically fade out acne scarring. Over a course of treatment, you’ll be able to see the scarring fade and a revitalised skin texture appear.
I am always happy to discuss, with no-obligation, a new patient’s acne scarring. When we see someone for the first time, I go through each option and together we create a plan of action to treat their acne scars, and potentially any remaining acne flare-ups.
