What happens to hair after the first laser? | Skin Perfection

What happens to hair after the first laser?

Let’s start by answering the question most people ask during their first session. What happens to hair after the first laser? After your first laser hair removal session, you will not walk out hair-free. And that’s not because the treatment didn’t work. It’s because laser hair removal works very differently from waxing, threading or shaving.

Once you understand what’s actually happening under the skin, the whole process makes sense, and the anxiety disappears. This is exactly how I explain it in a consultation.

Why laser doesn’t remove the hair instantly after the first session?

Laser hair removal doesn’t pull hair out. It doesn’t snap it off. And it doesn’t “zap” it away on the surface. What laser actually targets is the hair follicle, deep in the skin.

That’s why you must come shaven to your appointment.

If hair is left on the surface, the laser energy gets wasted burning the visible hair instead of travelling down to the follicle where it needs to do the work. Not only does that reduce results, it also increases the risk of surface irritation, pigmentation or marks. If a clinic ever tells you to come unshaven so they can “laser the hair off,” that’s a red flag. That’s not effective laser hair removal. That’s surface hair burning.

Proper laser hair removal requires the hair to be present in the follicle, but not visible on the skin.

What happens to hair after the first laser?

After your treatment, the follicle that was successfully targeted is damaged and can no longer support hair growth. But the hair that was inside that follicle doesn’t vanish instantly. Instead, your body pushes it out naturally.

This process usually starts around 10 to 14 days after your first session.

During this time, many clients panic because it looks like the hair is growing back. In reality, the opposite is happening. What you’re seeing is dead hair being expelled from the follicle.

What shedding looks and feels like, after the first laser?

Shedding doesn’t happen dramatically. You won’t see hair falling out in clumps. For some people, it’s very subtle. For others, it’s more noticeable.

You might notice:

  • hair coming away when you shower
  • hair rubbing off when you gently exfoliate
  • hair sliding out easily if you lightly pull it

That’s the key difference. When you pull on a shedding hair, it comes away with no resistance. That hair is dead. The follicle has done its job and pushed it out.

Once that happens, that specific follicle is finished. It won’t produce hair again.

Why you still see hair after the first treatment?

This part is really important for expectations. Only hairs that were in the active growth phase (anagen phase) at the time of your session can be treated. Not all hairs are growing at the same time. Some are resting. Some are transitioning. Those hairs won’t respond to laser yet.

So while treated hairs are shedding, other hairs are starting their growth cycle and becoming visible. That’s normal. It doesn’t mean laser didn’t work. It means your hair cycles are doing what they’ve always done.

This is exactly why laser hair removal is done as a course, not a one-off treatment.

What you should expect between sessions?

After your first session:

  • treated hairs shed over 1-2 weeks
  • skin often feels smoother and calmer
  • irritation from shaving or waxing starts to reduce
  • new hairs appear from untreated follicles

By the time you return for your second session, those new hairs are now in the right stage to be treated. Each appointment targets a new cycle. Over time, there are fewer follicles left to deal with, and hair density reduces significantly.

Why patience pays off?

Laser hair removal isn’t instant, but it is progressive. Each session builds on the last. The results compound. The skin improves and the hair becomes finer, lighter and slower to grow.

By the end of a properly timed course, most clients experience long-term hair reduction and relief from problems like ingrown hairs, folliculitis, strawberry legs and constant irritation.

That first session is just the beginning. It sets the process in motion.

If you want results, trust the process

If you’re starting laser hair removal and feel unsure after the first session, that’s completely normal. This treatment rewards consistency, correct timing and proper technique.
