What causes skin pigmentation?

Our skin contains melanin, which is the pigment that gives our skin its colour. More melanin makes your skin darker, whereas less makes your skin lighter.

When you have excess melanin, you are likely to see dark patches of skin forming. This is known as Hyperpigmentation and can affect people of all skin tones.

The most common types of skin pigmentation are freckles, sun spots or age spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

It is not uncommon to see patches of discoloured skin or skin pigmentation on the face or body. Skin pigmentation can appear as light or dark patches of skin, or it can be a different colour such as red or blue.

There are many different causes of skin pigmentation, but here are some of the common causes:

  •       Age and hormones
  •       Birthmarks
  •       Skin disorders
  •       Skin injuries or inflammation
  •       Skin rashes such as rosacea or dermatitis
  •       Skin cancers
  •       Medical conditions or medications

It is important to understand the cause of your skin pigmentation, to see if laser treatment is right for you. At your consultation, our practitioner will do a skin health check which will help us create a treatment plan.

Is laser pigmentation treatment right for me?

Laser treatment can help reduce and, in some instances, remove the following types of skin pigmentation:

  •       Uneven skin tone on the face
  •       Sun spots or age spots caused by too much sun exposure
  •       Sun damage on the face, neck, chest, arms and back of hands
  •       Individual skin pigmentation removal
  •       Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation resulting from acne scarring
  •       Inflammation and redness

Laser treatments for skin pigmentation

Laser pigmentation removal works to help reduce or remove the appearance of freckles, age spots and patches of discoloured skin. It does this by targeting the pigmented skin without damaging healthy skin tissue.

Laser photo facial skin rejuvenation

At our skin clinic in London we offer the laser photo facial to help treat different types of skin pigmentation. It’s great for tackling superficial pigmentation and those deeper within the skin.

Other types of IPL laser treatment only target one skin concern at a time. For example, laser hair removal or laser tattoo removal. Whereas the laser photo facial can tackle several skin conditions in one treatment. This includes acne scarring, age spots, sun damage and other unwanted pigmentation.

Not only does laser pigmentation treatment help to give you a more even skin tone, but it also improves the brightness and texture of your skin. After a course of laser treatment, you will see a clearer complexion.

Is laser pigmentation removal safe for my skin?

Not everyone will respond to laser treatment in the same way. This is why we provide an in depth consultation, so that we can talk to you about your skin concerns and find the best treatment for you.

As with any laser treatment, you will need to have a patch test to see whether you are suitable for treatment. This will need to be completed at least 48 hours before treatment.

If you have dark skin or a darker skin tone, you may not be suitable for this laser treatment. For patients with darker skin tones, we do provide other skin treatments such as light skin peels. Our experts will discuss alternative treatment options with you during your consultation.
